About the Book
The Gear Up Model: An Instructional Model embodies the idea of preparation—equipping learners with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to navigate the challenges of modern life and the evolving workforce. Designed as an instructional design process for developing teaching materials, the GEAR UP Model serves as a powerful framework for educators committed to constructivist learning.
The model encourages students to build upon prior knowledge, ask meaningful questions, engage in critical discussions, and conduct analytical investigations. Through these dynamic learning experiences, students strengthen both critical and creative thinking skills essential for lifelong success. Rooted in constructivist principles, the GEAR UP Model views learning as an active, social process where teachers guide and facilitate rather than simply deliver information.
Moreover, the model promotes collaborative inquiry, teamwork, and shared responsibility among students—helping them develop the interpersonal and leadership skills required for academic and professional growth. As Gates (2018) notes, collaborative learning not only enhances higher-order thinking but also increases confidence and self-efficacy. By integrating diverse teaching strategies and varied assessment tools, the GEAR UP Model ensures inclusivity and responsiveness to students’ unique learning needs, supporting their holistic development in both oral and written competencies.
Ultimately, the Gear Up Model stands as a practical and visionary guide for educators who seek to transform classrooms into spaces of exploration, cooperation, and purposeful learning—preparing every learner to gear up for life.
