We proudly congratulate our Founder, Christian Bacolod, on receiving recognition from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) through the inaugural Textile Academy: Textile Science and Technology Midyear Bootcamp for Educators.

Held last June 15-25, 2026, Bacolod was the sole representative from the Visayas and the only participant from the field of Culture and Arts Education, bringing a unique perspective to the intersection of textile science, technology, culture, and heritage.

This milestone reflects WovenFoliage’s continuing commitment to documenting, preserving, and promoting the Philippines’ rich weaving traditions and indigenous knowledge.

A meaningful reminder that when art meets science, heritage finds new ways to thrive. 🌿

exists because people keep it alive.

Across all regions, bearers, practitioners, civil society organisations, cultural and academic institutions and national and local authorities are working together to safeguard, transmit and celebrate living heritage.

Today, 185 countries are parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its Lists and Register now include 849 elements, including more than 100 multinational elements involving 117 countries.

Passed down from generation to generation, these traditions and practices provide communities with a sense of continuity and belonging.

On the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO recognises and celebrates the living heritage present in our communities and beyond: the knowledge, practices, craftsmanship, foodways, rituals, performing arts and social customs that connect people across generations and cultures.

Let us take a short trip down memory lane this as we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Month. 🌿

Last year, WovenFoliage had the opportunity to visit the Eskaya indigenous community in Duero, Bohol, to learn about the abaca cloth woven and used by the community for generations.

Chieftain Hilario S. Galambao shared the story of abaca cultivation and weaving of Eskaya, as well as the gradual decline of the tradition following the spread of abaca disease.

The visit was made possible with NCIP-Bohol, UP Diliman Professor Emerita Dr. Norma A. Respicio, Mr. Neil Gerard Reyes of the National Museum of the Philippines–Bohol, and photographer Kat Palasi

For , preserving traditional arts means more than documenting techniques. It means listening to the people who carry these memories and keeping their stories alive.

Because every fiber holds a story, and every story deserves to be remembered. 🌱

When leaves become loops; when loops become textures

Raffia fibers, gathered and interlaced by hand, transform into a tactile textile of knots and texture.

At , we keep one leaf, one strand, one fiber, at a time.

As we celebrate this year’s Museums and Galleries Month, here’s a little to one of ‘s memorable moments at the National Museum of the Philippines–Bohol.

Back in 2024, we had the privilege of sharing stories of Saguran-Raffia weaving; its materials, weavers, knowledge, and the traditions woven into every strand.

Looking back, it’s beautiful to see how one conversation can grow into a continuing journey of documenting, learning, and keeping heritage alive.

Because sometimes, preserving heritage begins with simply telling its story. 🌿

At WovenFoliage, we believe creativity is rooted in culture, carried by hands, and woven into the stories we share. 🌿

This Philippine Creative Industries Month, we celebrate the artists, artisans, makers, and creative communities who continue to shape our identity; one creation, one story, one fiber at a time.

On Apid Island, weaving transcends the simple act of creating something tangible. It is a way of remembering; of carrying knowledge, stories, and traditions from a pair of hands to another.

WHEN HANDS REMEMBER is WovenFoliage’s first publication, born from our time with the weavers of Apid Island, Leyte. It is a small collection of stories, photographs, and memories of the people who continue to keep this tradition alive, and of the hands that are now learning to carry it forward.

At its heart, this is a story of weavers — about hands that remember, the knowledge that is shared, and about hope that continues.

Coming December 2026.

Apid Island, one among the string of islands collectively called Cuatro Islas, lies 6 to 8 kilometers or 3 to 4 nautical miles off the coast of Inopacan in the western seaboard of Leyte. It is home to a dying weaving tradition, first documented by Institute of Human Kinetics (IHK) Instructor Christi...

From learning the craft to creating anew, the BCAED art apprentices, under the guidance of master weavers Emeliana “Nanay Flora” Galvez-Rosinas and Norma Galvez, explored new possibilities through Apid’s distinct sinapid braiding technique.

Bags, laptop cases, tumbler holders, placemats, hats, and coasters emerged in vibrant colors and textured surfaces; traditional knowledge taking new forms while remaining rooted in the island’s weaving heritage.

The apprenticeship culminated in SINAPID sa APID, an exhibit at the Inopacan Municipal Hall Lobby, celebrating the works born from learning, collaboration, and community.

And perhaps, this is where the story finds its most hopeful thread:

Nanay Flora is no longer the last hat weaver in the island.

We did not simply weave leaves into new forms. We had woven knowledge into hands, stories into practice, and heritage into the future.

In WovenFoliage, this is how traditions live on. This is how we weave stories of hope. 🌿
