Protect coasts at all 'coasts' ๐

The land meets the sea at a place called the coast. It is where we can physically observe the harmonic convergence of aquatic and terrestrial domains of the world. But often, coasts are left with nothing but residues of humanity`s disrespectful deeds. Trashes thrown from corner to corner, areas converted into busy industrial areas, human settlements built on what should be convened as protected zones, all of it leads to the silent sufferings of our coasts.
It is indeed that humans, bestowed with the highest form of intelligence, contribute the greatest in the degradation of our coastal areas. A place where we should be appreciating what our lands and waters have at the same time turned into a place of realizing the incompetence of people in conforming with the protection of the environment that has been our home ever since day one.
But knowing the fact that we consume the reality of being atop of every creature in the world, this shows light. Having the highest form of intelligence as compared to anything else with consciousness reiterates that even if we contribute harsh things to the environment, we still have the greater capacity to start anew with our ways of life. With this analogy, we can safely say that we also possess the ability to restore what have been destroyed. But how can we really harness the humanity`s greatest potential to protect our coasts?
To care for our coast, we must remember to recalibrate and redirect. But what things do we need to recalibrate and redirect?
Good change starts by recalibrating our minds. It is selfish for us not to think about our coasts when in fact it is where the progress of our communities started as accounted by history. Trades and major convergence of cultures dropped off the coasts. Remembering this and reflecting between the lines will eventually lead us to shift our visions to what benefits many rather than what satisfies the few. We need to learn and digest what our coast has been giving us. And when we start putting leverage in our mindset while reliving the importance of coasts to us ever since time zero, we can foresee a better outlook for our coasts in the future.
Moreover, as we recalibrate our minds, we must put this into action. It is not just enough that we state things, it is not just enough that what we have calibrated through our minds stays as a myth. For that, we need to redirect our steps. We need to emancipate the passiveness within us and start to get more involved. Do not worry about the things we ought to do to help you with this. In fact, one can start in the simplest way possible. We can join global coastal cleanup like the International Coastal Cleanup Day which is done every third Saturday of September and drives just like what Ilocos Sur Environmental Enthusiasts (ISEE) do with their flagship project Dalluyon. More than that, there are many more opportunities out there. It does not matter if it is big or small, because even the micro acts of protecting our coasts, when done collectively, can bear macro benefits not just for us but also for the environment.
Our coast has witnessed many things in our life. It does not speak yet it can account for the shift of time that happened. As said, it is where we can physically observe the harmonic convergence of aquatic and terrestrial domains of the world. Without it, without paying homage to its contributions to us, life above the land and below the water will be put in a situation that endangers the next generation with the threat of not being able to see any single coast.
So, as we go forth with this International Coastal Cleanup Day, as we remember the vitality of our coasts at this moment, let us put everything into action. Don't just let this be a one day commemoration but a life long and sustainable action. It is hard to reverse the damage that has been done but little by little, with our collective efforts and contributions to initiate good movement in protecting the place where the land meets the sea, we can make it up and mend what is needed to be fixed. If we do, our world foresees a future, a hopeful one where everything coexists in symphony.
