January was a busy month for TS Calliope with A/PO Tawi and A/PO Murphy attending the Cadet Coxwains Course and ENS Skelsey attending the Marine Safety Officers course in Auckland.

The students who attended the Cadet Coxswain Course were trained and assessed on a range of skills that are required to effectively lead a crew to sail safely, including: rigging the boats, capsize drills, person overboard drills, coming alongside another boat, and general sailing skills.

The MSO Course focuses on developing the students skills and knowledge required to plan and conduct practical Maritime activities. This is similar to what they would be required to do back at their respective units. The six MSO students also received a crash course of the Cadet Coxswain Course, and training in safe boat handling for both sail and power vessels.

Bravo Zulu to you all, we look forward to putting your new skills to use!⛵️

Navy Cadets in Whanganui would like to invite all Year 9 and above students and their parent/caregiver to our recruitment evening. It’s a chance to come along and learn more about what the New Zealand Cadet Forces is all about, have a look around and see if it’s what you want to do.
Wednesday 4th Februrary at 7pm,
Army Hall on Maria Place Ext (opposite the recycling centre).
Interested in the Navy, Maritime Careers, bushcraft, navigation, first-aid, military style service, leadership and much more? Then come along and check out what we have to offer.
There is no commitment to join, however if you do choose to give it a shot, we ask you to stick it out for 3 weeks so you can see the wide range of things we do.
You will receive more information on the evening and can ask any questions you might have. You may even see someone you know there.
Spread the word with your friends and bring them along to.
Intake numbers will be limited this year, so it will be on a first come, first in bases.
We look forward to seeing you then!
If you cant make it on the 4th, feel free to stop in any Wednesday night during the school term - we would love to see you there.

A Few weeks ago TS Calliope wrapped up the year with our formal Dining-In and Prizegiving alongside 9SQN. It was a fantastic evening with good food, good company, and a chance to recognise the hard work our cadets have put in throughout 2025.
A big thank you to GPCAPT Peter Gibson for joining us as our guest speaker. His message of encouragement and service really landed with our cadets.
Congratulations to all cadets who received awards or promotions. You earned it. And thank you to the friends and whānau who came along, your support means a lot to the unit.
As we close out 2025, we wish everyone a safe and happy break. Bring on 2026! There are plenty more opportunities, challenges, and adventures ahead. 🎉🌟

A huge thank you to the amazing organisations who make it possible for us to use SkoolLoop — a tool that keeps our cadets, parents, and wider community connected and informed about everything we do.

Your support helps us communicate important updates, events, and opportunities quickly and clearly — it makes a real difference to how we operate.

We encourage everyone to support the businesses and groups who support us. They help keep our Squadron moving forward and our young people engaged in something great.

Over Labour weekend Cadets from TS Calliope travelled down to Wellington for a weekend on the water.
Although the wind didnt play ball and almost no sailing was done, Cadets were still able to go pulling along with raft building, 1st aid and the opportunity to go on the range followed by a trip to Wrights Hill Fort.

A big thank you to OFFCDT Bardsley and the team from TS Tamatoa Navy Cadets for hosting us for an amazing weekend away.

Last weekend Cadets from TS Calliope joined No.9 City of Whanganui Squadron, Air Training Corps on their annual Flying Camp.

Although not quite inline with the typical Navy Cadet Programme, an amazing time for all involved, with all the Cadets given the opportunity to fly with the Whanganui Aero Club, use the simulators at the NZICPA, visit Air Chathams and Air Whanganui.

Thank you to all the busnesses that were involved to make this weekend happen.
