🎙️ **MERYEM XAN — THE ASSYRIAN GENOCIDE SURVIVOR WHO BECAME A PIONEER OF KURDISH MUSIC** 🌹
Meryem Xan (1904–1949) was an **Assyrian Christian singer from Dêrgul in the historic region of Botan**, today part of Şırnak. Her family was of **Assyrian roots and belonged to the Chaldean Catholic Church**✝️
Born during the final years of the Ottoman Empire, her childhood was marked by one of the darkest chapters in Assyrian history. During the **Assyrian Genocide (Seyfo) of 1915**, amid the massacres and displacement of the region’s Christian population, Meryem found refuge with a Kurdish family and grew up in a Kurdish-speaking environment. She later became widely known by the Kurdish name/title **“Xan,”** under which she would become famous. ✝️💔
🎶 Her extraordinary voice — **often described as having the power and expression of a musical instrument itself** — would eventually make her one of the **pioneering female stars of Kurdish music**, with her fame spreading across the **Middle East**.
Meryem became famous for singing in **Kurmanji Kurdish**, bringing traditional songs, emotional laments, and the storytelling traditions of the region to a much wider audience. Her journey eventually led her to **Baghdad**, where her musical career flourished. 🌍

Sadly, **Meryem Xan’s Assyrian Christian origins are often absent from modern accounts of her life**, particularly in biographies that focus almost exclusively on her place within Kurdish musical history. Other accounts give different names and family backgrounds, reflecting conflicting traditions about her early life and origins. **Recognizing her enormous contribution to Kurdish music should not require overlooking the Assyrian Christian heritage associated with her story.** 🕊️
