Josephine Singh came to the CELF Leadership Waikato Programme and left with a leadership style that is genuinely her own.

Jo works at Waikato Women's Refuge – Te Whakaruruhau, where the work of supporting whānau through crisis requires leadership and capacity grounded in authenticity and a strength of knowledge about who she is and what she stands for.

"I didn't just learn my strengths; I learned to claim them. I began building the style of leadership that felt authentically mine, not a performance of what I thought a leader should be."

He mihi maioha ki a koe, Jo – thank you for sharing your journey with us.

🌿 Leadership is more than a role. It's a responsibility to our people and our whenua.

"Leadership is about being the best ambassador for your iwi, hapū, marae, whānau and community. Be authentic and genuine in your approach for a better and greater Aotearoa-hood.

Kia kitea i ngā mahi, ehara i te kupu anake. Be seen in deeds, not in words alone."
- Norm Hill, CELF Alumni

Norm's words carry something that sits at the heart of everything CELF believes in. That true leadership is about service. It's what you say, what you do, and who you do it for.

The CELF Leadership Waikato Programme brings together leaders from every corner of the Waikato, across sectors, cultures, and communities. We are united by a shared commitment to make this region stronger for everyone.

💛 Kia kaha. Lead with purpose. Lead with integrity. Lead for our communities.

Sometimes the most important journey is the one that takes you back to yourself.

Josephine Singh came to the CELF Leadership Waikato Programme ready for something to shift – and it did, from the very beginning.

"CELF came at the right time. It was a catalyst for me. It began with self-reflection, self-introspection, self-analysis, careful yet unintentional movements that felt like the weight of my whakapapa pressing into my bones."

Tēnā koe e Jo, tēnā ō kōrero – thank you for your words and for so generously sharing your journey with us.

💛 This is why we do what we do.

"True leadership is not about holding power but about empowering others." CELF Elevate Graduate

Words like these are why our Leadership Programme exists, to create leaders who lift others with them.

Our 2025 Social Impact Report found that 95% of graduates shifted how they see their role and responsibility in the community. This is what happens when you're in the room with people from every sector of the Waikato, challenging and learning from each other, and building something bigger than any one organisation.

This is what a thriving Waikato looks like. 🌱

✨The best leaders know themselves deeply - and lead from that place.

"[I am] far more aware and conscious of who I am and how I need to adjust my strengths depending on the situation. CELF provided me the space, knowledge and skills to understand myself better, be more comfortable with who I am, and adjust where required." - Graeme Geurts, CELF Alumni

Self-awareness is the foundation of everything we do at CELF. Because before you can lead others effectively, you need to understand yourself. This includes your strengths, your blind spots, and how you show up differently in different situations.

Our Leadership Programme creates that space. A genuine, supportive environment where Waikato leaders can slow down, look inward, and emerge with greater clarity, confidence, and capability.

There's a kind of leadership that shows up in the quiet work, the systems held together behind the scenes and the whānau supported through crisis.

Josephine Singh works at Waikato Women's Refuge - Te Whakaruruhau, and in 2025 she completed CELF’s Leadership Waikato Programme. What she found wasn't a new version of herself - it was a way back to who she already was.

"CELF came at the right time. It was a catalyst for me. It began with self-reflection, self-introspection, self-analysis, careful yet unintentional movements that felt like the weight of my whakapapa pressing into my bones."

Ngā mihi nui Jo, thank you for sharing your journey with us 💫

Our 2025 Social Impact Report revealed that 76% of CELF alumni say the relationships they built through the programme have directly impacted their work.

These are real, tangible outcomes from new employment opportunities to board positions, cross-sector collaborations and a strong peer support network.

One alumnus put it perfectly:

"I keep in regular contact with half of my cohort. We are like peer support for each other regardless of being in different industries. Our diversity is a strength."

Our Leadership Programme develop leaders and helps builds a network of trusted peers that stays with you long after graduation.

We're honoured to share the story of Josephine Singh, who completed the CELF Waikato Leadership Programme in 2025 while continuing her mahi at Waikato Women's Refuge – Te Whakaruruhau.

For Jo, the programme was a journey of reflection, reconnection, and self-discovery - a space to reflect honestly and build upon a leadership style that felt genuinely her own. One of the most profound shifts came through CELF's He Piko He Taniwha change model, which reframed how she understands her role alongside others navigating change.

"Our He Piko He Taniwha model taught me to see change as a human journey, full of emotional and spiritual challenges. It taught me to lead with empathy, to empower early adopters, and to guide those who are cautious - not by pushing them, but by walking the path alongside them."

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more of Jo's reflections - on claiming your strengths, leading with radical honesty, and finding your own light. Her words are generous and grounded, and we hope they'll resonate with anyone wanting to step into their own, unique power as a leader.
