Weโ€™re taking a break!

Our team isnโ€™t sure yet whether it will be temporary or permanent, but we do know that we wonโ€™t be able to get through the impending kitten season with the resources we currently have.

We started the year in a strong position, but our resources have been steadily depleted and we havenโ€™t been able to bounce back.

So, for now, weโ€™re taking a breather, regrouping, and working out what needs to change for us to keep serving our community sustainably.

The reality is that itโ€™s tough out there, and being a charity doesnโ€™t make us immune to the economic climate. In many ways, it makes us more exposed to it. We rely heavily on supporters and funders, as well as adoptions, and all three have declined recently while requests for help have increased significantly.

Weโ€™re not alone in this. Many animal organisations are facing the same pressures, but we donโ€™t have product sponsorships to free up funds or significant reserves to fall back on. We simply have to work with what we have.

Weโ€™re incredibly proud of what weโ€™ve achieved in just a few years:

โ€ข Almost 2,000 (700 so far this year) cats have received help
โ€ข Almost five tonnes of pet food have been distributed to whฤnau in need through our Pฤtaka Kai
โ€ข Weโ€™ve helped desex a lot of cats for owners doing it tough, with the aim of lightening future loads
โ€ข Weโ€™ve taken on large-scale welfare cases, including one involving 113 cats on a single property
โ€ข Weโ€™ve bailed out over 50 cats this year from other rescuers whoโ€™d gotten in over their heads. The lucky ones who didnโ€™t require immediate euthanasia on welfare grounds took months to rehabilitate.

But all of that comes at a cost.

Adoptions have dropped. Inmates are staying with us longer, increasing the cost of each animal's care, and the cost of getting a cat healthy, desexed and ready for adoption now routinely exceeds the adoption fee.

Grant funding has become increasingly difficult to secure, particularly for the operational costs that keep a shelter running. Finding funding for animal charities has always been hard โ€“ funders struggle to place a financial value on the mahi we do, and when those grants are for operational expenses rather than projects where societal impact can be measured, itโ€™s even harder. At the same time, everything from food and litter to insurance, fuel, software, veterinary care and other day-to-day expenses has increased.

Some projects have also grown far beyond what we initially expected. In a number of cases, situations were more extensive than first understood, and weโ€™ve had to absorb thousands of dollars in euthanasia costs to mitigate ongoing suffering because once we make a commitment, we follow it through. Thatโ€™s what we do.

And perhaps most importantly, the way our community are able to support our mahi has changed. The desire to help is still there. What has changed is peopleโ€™s capacity to do so. For some of our supporters, the small regular donation they once made is now simply not a financial possibility. For others, that money may now be the difference between their own pet seeing a vet or putting food on the table.

We completely understand that. Theyโ€™re fantastic people who genuinely want to support us but theyโ€™re doing it tough too!

So, for now, weโ€™ll continue working through our existing waitlist, and our safety-net commitment to our previous inmates remains in place but we canโ€™t responsibly say yes to new requests for help until we have a clearer picture of what the future looks like.

This isnโ€™t a decision weโ€™ve made lightly. Itโ€™s one we need to make if weโ€™re going to have any chance of continuing our mahi.

New Lives Community Desexing Programme ๐Ÿพ

Weโ€™re excited to share some important information about our Community Desexing Programme for cats and dogs.

We have two vet clinics on board, serving Hamilton and now Te Awamutu, helping us provide much-needed desexing support to our community.

Our community desexing is for people who genuinely can not afford the retail cost of desexing. Please do not take advantage of this as it ruins our trust.

Vouchers include desexing, microchipping and registration with the NZ Companion Animal Register.

๐Ÿฑ Cat Vouchers โ€” Hamilton & Te Awamutu
Your contribution is $60, and we cover the balance.

๐Ÿถ Dog Vouchers โ€” Te Awamutu Only
Your contribution is $110, and we cover the balance.

Due to previous abuse of our automated voucher system, dog vouchers will now be manually created.

To apply, you will need to provide:
* Proof of address and a photo of your dog. Dog vouchers will also have a strict use-by date. Our team has been spending a considerable amount of time following up with people to use their vouchers, and this simply isnโ€™t sustainable.
Use it or lose it. Once a voucher expires, we will not be able to reissue it.

Vouchers will only be created once an application has been completed and the invoice has been paid. There may be a delay in processing applications, particularly over weekends.

Routine desexing is available only for dogs:
* Under 30kg, that are not pregnant, male dogs with both testicles descended, living within Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Ohaupo, Pirongia or ลŒtorohanga.

All new vouchers have an expiry date of 180 days from the date they are generated.

Please note:
* Unused vouchers are non-refundable.
* Vouchers are not transferable to another person.
* Full names must be used when applying.
* Anyone attempting to avoid the checks by using initials or incomplete names may have their voucher cancelled.
* Please check the website for information before contacting us. Emails requesting information that is already available on the website will not receive a response, as we need to keep administration to a minimum.
* Please visit our website to check whether you qualify for subsidised desexing. All eligibility information and voucher applications are available there.

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿถ Help us keep this programme going โค๏ธ
This programme is funded through funds raised by our Op Shop in Cambridge. Without your continued support โ€” donating items, shopping with us and spreading the word we cannot continue providing this much needed programme. Every donation and every purchase helps us desex more cats and dogs and make a real difference in our community.

We know many people are keen to find out more about the new service area, however, we wonโ€™t be responding to individual messages or enquiries about this. All the information you need will be included in our post next week.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we get everything updated. We really appreciate your interest and enthusiasm! ๐Ÿ’™

Update: On shoplifting incident.

Firstly some of the comments are disgusting and unnecessary. Race doesnt come in to any of this.

This post was not meant to cause any distress and for that we apologise.

There is CCTV footage of items being taken from younger lady in photo and leaving our premises with stolen goods.

We would like these items returned.

Comments have now been turned off.
