⚓ Women supporting women on the water 👭🚺
On Sunday afternoon, a few of our wāhine crew, along with Lisa from Coastguard New Zealand, headed to sunny Golden Bay to deliver a fantastic Suddenly in Charge course at the Pōhara Boat Club.
Run by women for women, the course focused on building confidence and providing participants with the practical knowledge needed if they suddenly found themselves responsible for a boat or faced an emergency on the water.
With husbands or partners often taking the lead, this course gave these fabulous and motivated wāhine the knowledge, skills and confidence to help keep themselves and their whānau safe if something went wrong.
Everyone left with practical actions to work on, including:
✅ Spending more time at the helm and learning how their boat works
✅ Building confidence controlling and manoeuvring the boat
✅ Checking lifejackets, crotch straps, canisters and expiry dates
✅ Preparing a grab bag and keeping safety equipment together
✅ Checking flares, EPIRBs and PLBs
✅ Learning how to make a Pan Pan call
✅ Practising anchoring and using throw lines
✅ Creating a pre-departure checklist
✅ Logging trips using the Coastguard app
✅ Improving local knowledge and boating confidence
One participant summed it up perfectly: “Kick the husband out and take over more!” 😄
👏 Well done, ladies! We cannot wait to see you owning it and feeling confident out on the water.
A special thank you to Lisa from Coastguard New Zealand for helping us deliver the programme, to our incredible hosts at Pōhara Boat Club for arranging and hosting the event, and to the Tasman Harbour Master for providing resources and goodies for our participants!
Most of all, thank you to everyone who attended and made the afternoon such a positive, practical and empowering experience. We hope to see many more women confidently taking the helm!
