Every Friday we share facts about New Zealand’s democracy and electoral system ℹ️

This week’s Friday Fact is: Six months out from a general election, Parliament can agree not to hold a by-election if there’s a vacancy.

This year's election is on 7 November, which means that from 7 May, if an electorate seat becomes vacant, Parliament can choose not to hold a by-election.

At least 75% of the members of Parliament would need to agree that the vacancy would not be filled.

Morena e te whānau,
Our rohe is under a strong wind warning and heavy rain watch this weekend due to Former Tropical Cyclone Vaianu. Now is this time to take some basic precautions so you and your whānau are prepared if we lose power.
🔌Unplug major appliances. This will reduce the power surge and possible damage when power is restored.
🏥 If you are medically dependent on power, call 111 or go to your nearest medical centre if it is safe to do so.
⚡️ Treat all downed lines/electrical equipment as LIVE at all times and stay at least 10 metres away - that's about the length of a bus.
🔋 Have a solar-powered or battery-powered radio so you can keep up with the latest news and alerts. Your car radio will work too if need be. If you're trying to save battery, tune in on the hour every hour. We'll add a link in the comments to where to find radio station frequencies.
🧀 If the power goes out, eat the food from your fridge first, then your freezer, then the food in the cupboard or your emergency kit.
📱 If you need emergency help, always try calling 111 — even if your mobile phone shows no signal or your network provider appears unavailable. Your call may still connect via another network provider nearby even if your own network provider services are down.
💸 The same applies if you have no credit on your mobile phone account. Emergency calls to 111 are free of charge and can be made even without credit.

Don't forget to check in on your kaumatua, neighbours or anyone you may think is needing a hand to get their property sorted before it's too late. We will be sharing any updates as they are released.
