Mōkai Pātea Waitangi Claims Trust

Mōkai Pātea Waitangi Claims Trust Official page of Mōkai Pātea Waitangi Claims Trust. Each iwi retains their own tino rangatiratanga and this is explicitly acknowledged in the Trust's deed.

The Trust was set up by the four Rūnanga, Ngāi Te Ohuake, Ngāti Hauiti, Ngāti Tamakōpiri and Ngāti Whitikaupeka, to settle our iwi’s claims against the Crown for breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The Trust was set up by the four Rūnanga representing the four iwi of Mōkai Pātea, namely:
Ngāi Te Ohuake
Ngāti Hauiti
Ngāti Tamakōpiri
Ngāti Whitikaupeka
The Trust’s purpose is to collectively settle the

four iwi’s claims against the Crown for breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the Mōkai Pātea rohe. The decision by the four iwi to collectivise has historical precedent – in the past these iwi often acted collectively on major issues affecting them all. The Trust therefore represents, with Rūnanga approval on behalf of each iwi, the interests of all of the confederated iwi of Mōkai Pātea.

As an iwi collective on our own journey, we acknowledge our whanaunga of Whanganui Iwi on the signing of their Deed of Settlement.

Moments like this remind us of the shared history, challenges and aspirations across our people.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our fellow trustee, Thomas Curtis. Thomas was a valued member of Ngāti Hauiti Rūnanga and has served on our trust for a number of years. He was steadfast in his commitment to his iwi, his whānau, and his people.

He tangata manaaki, he tangata ngākau nui, he pou tokomanawa mō tō tātou kaupapa. His presence, humour, and dedication will be deeply missed.

Ngā mihi nui mō tō mahi, e Tom. Moe mai rā i te rangimārie.

Tangi details to follow. At this stage, Wednesday at Rātā Marae is proposed, and we will keep you updated on this post.

Koha can be given to support the whānau:

He aha ō moemoeā mō āpōpō? what are your dreams for tomorrow for your whānau, iwi, and hapū?
