A very important read 🀍

Cat curfews, fines, and registration let's talk about what's actually going on.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/whanganui-chronicle/news/pest-control-expert-calls-for-nighttime-cat-curfew-in-whanganui/RY7CX55YYRFSDBPDXHQFQ647WI/

New Zealand has a real biodiversity problem. Nobody serious is disputing that. But when a pest control consultant calls for nighttime cat curfews in Whanganui, it's worth asking whether the proposed solution matches the actual problem or whether it's taking the path of least political resistance.

Because here's the thing. We have housing pressure, infrastructure strain, declining waterways, disappearing native habitat, illegal dumping, pollution, and urban sprawl chewing through what's left of our green spaces. These are complex, expensive, politically uncomfortable problems to fix.

But Mr Whiskers sleeping on the neighbour's deck at 11pm? That one apparently needs urgent regulatory attention.

The honest picture is more complicated than the headlines suggest. Feral cats truly wild, unsocialised animals with no human connection do cause genuine harm to native species in vulnerable areas. That's real, and it matters. But feral cats exist because of irresponsible human behaviour: dumping and abandonment. The animals at the end of that chain are symptoms, not the cause.

Stray cats are a different category entirely. These are animals still connected to people fed by neighbours, managed by community carers, capable of being des*xed and rehomed. Lumping them in with feral cats to inflate the problem number is misleading, and it happens constantly in this debate.

And the proposed tools follow a predictable path. First come curfews. Then nuisance bylaws. Then cat fines. And following close behind registration for New Zealand's 1.2 million cats, generating tens of millions of dollars in council revenue. None of it touches a single feral animal. By definition, feral cats are outside any registration system. These measures land entirely on responsible owners and community carers. Compliant people comply. The actual problem doesn't.

What genuinely reduces feral populations is less politically exciting: accessible des*xing, addressing abandonment at its source, and proper habitat restoration. These are harder and more expensive than a bylaw, which may explain why they consistently get less attention than registration schemes that happen to generate revenue.

There's also a cultural cost worth naming. Years of "cats are pests" messaging has real-world consequences. Poisonings, shootings, and deliberate cruelty toward owned pets are increasing. Public language shapes public behaviour and when you spend long enough telling people an animal is a pest, some people start acting on it.

That matters beyond the animals themselves. Normalising the harming and killing of harmless creatures changes the social fabric of a community. There is well-established research linking cruelty to animals with broader erosion of empathy in society. How we treat the vulnerable including animals reflects and shapes who we are as people.

Cats are also one of the greatest tools we have for teaching children empathy and kindness. The responsibility of caring for an animal, the bond that forms, the lesson that another living creature's comfort and safety mattersthese are not small things. They are foundational. A culture that frames cats as targets undermines that, and we should be honest about what we are trading away when we go down that path.

Nobody is saying wildlife protection doesn't matter. It absolutely does. But serious environmental policy should be proportionate, evidence-based, and targeted at the actual drivers of the problem not the easiest thing to put a fine on

Void kitten needs a name! 🐾

This sweet girl has come from the colony. She has been in care for a week now and while she started off shy, she has now decided I am worth putting full trust in πŸ₯Ή

Yesterday she was given the run of the bathroom after Tammy moved into my bedroom. She hid at first but by this morning she was coming up to me voluntarily for all of the affection 😻

She loves attention and is learning to play now. She is a lot more relaxed than Tammy is, choosing to snooze over playing, but she does love chasing a ball around when she gets a burst of energy!

Her sponsor has named her Lindy 🀍

Tabby needs a name! 😻

Trying to get clear photos of this girl is a mission, she is super active 😹

She is very playful, zooming at top speed around the room chasing anything that's moving. She loves to climb up onto my shoulders and is the biggest face licker 😹
When she's sufficiently tired herself out, she is a big snuggle bug who enjoys a lap to curl up on and a face to smooch.

She is very demanding of attention and if another kitty is receiving love she will be right up in there, even if she was happily snoozing before 😹

Her sponsor has named her Tammy 🀍

This week we trapped two colony kittens.

Last week we noticed 5 new kittens from a tortie mama around 6-8 weeks old. With confirmation that they could go down to Feral Nation we began trapping.

On Monday we caught a tabby kitten... and she turned out to be quite a bit bigger than the other 4 πŸ˜…

Yesterday, I trapped a little void. This kitten is from a litter who moved away from the area while still young, and they are not often around outside of feeding time.

I realised, once home, that the void and tabby were around the same size, and with tabby weighing 1.2kg it would not make sense for her to be part of torties litter.
The litter that moved away included a tabby, but the tabby had been missing for some time..
We believe that this tabby girl is voids missing sister.

Two kittens trapped, neither from the litter we were aiming for, but that's just how it goes sometimes and we are glad to have 2 more kittens safe off of the streets 🀍

The reunion has not been super great πŸ˜…
Tabby girl moved from the crate to have the run of the bathroom as she has become super friendly and comfortable, and void is now crated.. But when I try to give void some attention, tabby gets all up in my face and demands the attention for herself. She has hissed at void a few times (but also chirped at them) and earlier today gave a gentle bap, resulting in a bit of time out so I could focus on void without her fomo getting in the way πŸ˜‚
Void just sits there, still shy and figuring out this new way of living, but they are open to strokes and scritches and I don't think it will take long for them to come around, just like tabby did.

Not all family get along. We have seen this before with Moonpie and her 3 siblings (Midnight, Starmie, and John, who went to Pōneke Ngeru Rescue). Moonpie was a feral little lady who didn't trust anyone, but once separated from her siblings she came out of her shell and became the first foster fail in IBKC πŸ₯°

We will see how the next couple of days go for our new kittens.
Ideally, they learn to coexist and tabby teaches void how lovely human interaction is, but if they can't get along then they will be separated.
We are low on foster homes so if you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time! Your commitment is the difference between existing on the streets or the chance at a real life. Please get in touch if you can help 🀍

Tabby is as needy as ever, void is so brave and trusting and I am so proud of them both for the steps they have taken since being in care πŸ₯Ή

Torties litter are yet to be trapped. I have been out most of the week and will continue next week in the hopes of rescuing them 🀞
It has been a busy week at IBKC with many days trapping to no avail, but it was worth those days of empty traps to have these little lives safe from the cold and dangers of outside, with no worry of ever having to breed or fight to survive 🀍

We run solely on donations and out of our own pockets. If you are able to support our efforts please find our banking information below.
Physical donations can be dropped to the Taihape Library or The Cyprus Tree in Ohakune.
Thank you for your support 😻

This little one is Chris' brother, he was trapped at the rest stop by one of our foster mamas the day after Chris was 😻

He went straight to his foster home and Chris joined him a few days later.
In the time they were apart, the boys both cried when left alone. When reunited, they settled down immediately πŸ₯Ή they must have missed each other 🀍

He is not as openly friendly as Chris but he is getting braver, and he particularly loves a wash with a cloth.
Hopefully Chris can continue helping him come out of his shell!

His sponsor has named him Spritz 🀍

❗️FOSTER HOMES NEEDED URGENTLY❗️

We desperately need fosters who are comfortable holding an adult cat in a crate for 3-7 days following des*xing.

The Taihape Colony is growing. Winter is coming, with it bringing increased risk of death for kittens, but we have very limited space to hold adults for des*xing and recovery 😞
Males will need to be fostered for 3 days following the procedure, and females for 7 days.
These adults will be returned to the colony (once des*xed and microchipped under IBKC) where they will continue being cared for until we have long-term space and funds to retrap and socialise.

Everything they need is provided by us, including a crate for them to be in.
It doesn't matter if you work or study full time,
all they require is food, water, a clean litter tray, and a clean bed.

Do you have -
β™‘ A room free of other animals to put a crate in?
β™‘ Time and confidence to change a litter tray, feed, and keep their crate clean?

If so, you are a perfect candidate for fostering our colony kits!

Please get in touch or fill out our foster form if you can help πŸ™

Our adoption process starts with a pre-adoption application form so we can ensure the right fit for kitty and human.
You can fill this out at any time, whether we have a current kitty you would like to meet, or if you are wanting to add to your fur family in the future. This does not mean you have to commit to adopting, but if we have your information and needs on file and a kitty comes up that seems a perfect match, we can get in touch with you 😻

🌼 PLEASE NOTE 🌼
β€’ Kitties may come with conditions (no dog household, indoor only, etc) - We will only adopt to homes that fit their needs.
β€’ If your application fits a kitty we will invite you to meet them in their safe space (or at an adoption day), let them get a feel for you and make sure it is a suitable fit for both kitty and human.
β€’ If chosen, there will be a simple adoption form to be signed by both parties.
β€’ The adoption form stipulates that if the adoption is not working, you can return the kitty and receive a refund within the first 7 days of adoption. We have a lifetime return policy, should the kitty need to come back to us for any reason.
β€’ Any potential health concerns/special dietary requirements will be made clear in any adoption post, and reiterated in person.

🐾 The adoption fee is $250 per kitty 🐾
This does not cover all expenses paid - but covers enough treatments to keep us running and able to provide adoptions to the community.
All adoptees are des*xed, microchipped, have been vet checked, are up to date on flea and worm treatment, and come with a free pet insurance cover trial.

This little man was trapped at a rest stop between Taihape and Waiouru on Friday 😻

He was initially quite scared (as expected), but still preferred to have company in the room.
I managed to get some scritches and strokes in from the start but he was hesitant to trust me..
Today, he decided to play with me πŸ₯Ή
In between playing I stroked him and found out he really loves a butt scratch 😹

I finally managed to check his s*x when he laid down to play, and as soon as I announced he was a boy he jumped up, purred, and started smooching my hand.. Almost as if he was just waiting for me to find out before committing to affection! Once he committed it was all over, and we had face smooches and purrs galore 🀍

He is one brave little dude, and such a lover. Seeing him take this step forward makes me so proud πŸ₯Ή

His sponsor has named him Chris 🀍
