Puhoi Landcare

01/10/2026

A huge well done to all our competitors who joined the Puhoi Possum & Rabbit Hunt! 448 possums and 34 rabbits less to threaten our native wildlife. Good on you for braving the weather, sleep deprivation, daylight savings and mud…from the sounds of all the banter, tall tales and laughter at the weigh ins, the real win was spending time with whanau and friends, enjoying the outdoors 🙌

Congratulations to the Waiwera Bosses (led by Brian Titford) who took out the supreme group award and Luke Schollum, who won the supreme individual award - very well deserved!

Finally, a big thanks again to our wonderful sponsors for your support and fantastic prizes. You helped make this a great event not only for conservation, but especially for our community ❤️

Bring on the Puhoi Possum & Rabbit Hunt 2027!

Puhoi Possum & Rabbit Hunt

If you are looking for an individual challenge, a chance to get your mates together or a fun family activity to kick off the school holidays, come and join us for the Puhoi Possum & Rabbit Hunt, taking place 25 - 27 September 2026.

How it works

Participants register on Friday 25th, 5-7pm at Puhoi Motors. You can register as an individual ($10), or a group of up to 6 ($25 per group).

From registration until the close of weigh in on Sunday 27th, 12 noon you compete to shoot/trap/or otherwise humanely cull as many possums and rabbits as you can, on land you are legally permitted to access. This is not like an English trail hunt, but rather a competition to catch possums and rabbits on properties you have access to yourself over the weekend. You are not restricted to the Puhoi area (but we do encourage as much pest control locally as we can!)

On Saturday and Sunday there are designated weigh in times. Bring your dead catches in to be weighed and counted. Puhoi Landcare team members will weigh your catches.

Carcasses can be left for Puhoi Landcare to recycle.

Prize giving

The Prize giving will be on Sunday, 27th, Puhoi Sports Club from 4-6pm. All welcome, gold coin donation for the sausage sizzle and the bar will be open to purchase drinks.

There will be prizes for various categories including heaviest possum, heaviest rabbit, most possums, most rabbits, with divisions for individual, under 16 and groups.

We have some amazing prizes including from Stihl, Explore Group, Puhoi Valley and The Local Farmer!

See you at registration next Friday!!
