Today is World Oceans Day!

Obviously Sea Scouts think that every day is oceans day, but it is important to pause and think about how our actions are affecting the ocean, the plants and animals that live in it. And the many people around the world who depend on the sea for sustenance and livelihood. With a warming climate the ocean is doing a huge job absorbing much of the extra warmth, and as that continues faces all kinds of changes and disruption.

In celebration and support of the life and livelihood that the ocean sustains, UN WOD 2021 will feature keynotes, panel discussions and presentations that spotlight biodiversity, latest oceanic discoveries, the interconnectivity between the ocean and its ecosystems, and more.

8 SJSS Scouts used their school holidays to go tramping, tackling the infamous Barra Track to Mitre Flats and finding that it lives up to the reputation, plus several wasp stings to keep it interesting.

Next day they climbed up Mitre Peak to beyond the treeline, enjoying views out across the Wairarapa and experiencing the feeling of being on the Tararua tops, before returning out along the Barra on day three.

Trips like this teach all kinds of practical skills, choosing equipment, meal plans and team cooperation, plus build resilience and friendships. It was a tough trip but everyone helped each other and had a great time.

Huge thanks to our adult volunteers - you make these trips possible!

Up past your bedtime? Not as late as these two!!!

Scout Tui on Sliver, and Venturer Morgan on XL-R8, are both racing overnight tonight in the Altex 24hr Endurance Yacht Race!

They've been going since 11am this morning, completing a leg out of the harbour to FitzroyBay and back, and now completing laps of the harbour to see who can cover the most distance in the time allowed. Totally mad, but both these fine young people have completed this race before!!
