Onetangi Beach Races

Onetangi Beach Races Back in 2026 at the Waiheke Dirt Track, Sunday 15th February!! in 1998. Onetangi Beach Races once again the event became a huge success!

The Onetangi Beach Races, a family fun day out, started on Waiheke over 100 years ago and was a major attraction down the years. Local authorities stopped it in 1924 because they decided the people of the time were gambling too much money! Revived in 1983 by Keith Haub, the owner of the then McGinty’s pub in Onetangi – named after his champion racehorse – it again became a huge event on the island. However, ten years later the event died out before being revived by the Rotary Club of Waiheke Inc. COVID and compliance costs have prevented the event being presented since 2021 and Rotary Waiheke transferred the operations to Waiheke event in 2023. It is hoped that as the economy improved this iconic event will once again be run in Summer 2026

This is a fundraising promotion for charity while providing a free, family, fun day for locals and visitors alike.

Onetangi Beach Races 2026 at the Dirt Track Cancelled 😢

Event Organiser, Warwick Grey said the decision to cancel is heart wrenching; “A number of logistical challenges have made it impossible for us to present an event that we feel would honour the legacy of this much-loved Waiheke event.”

While the organising team is disappointed that we can’t stage the event this year, if there is enough interest in the future another attempt may be made.

Huge thanks to our supporters thus far - Waiheke Dirt Track Club Committee, the Waiheke Local Board, our Waiheke rescue service organisations, Waiheke Police and many Waiheke businesses and organisations including Arnet Law, Fullers, Sealink, Tankman,
Planorama, Obees, Placemakers, Pet Connect, Green Acres, Sign Maidens, Waiheke Distilling Company and Waiheke Water.

Let's vision for a positive future for this wonderful community event, meantime, fans can continue to see the history of past events on the Onetangi Beach Races website and social media pages.

Thank you Waiheke!
Warwick and the OBR team.

🍔 WAIHEKE CLUBS & COMMUNITY GROUPS — WE NEED YOUR FOOD! 🍰
(Seriously… we’re hungry.)

OBR 2026 is shaping up to be an epic community day out — but we can’t do it without the real stars of the show:
👉 Your legendary fundraising food stalls!

Got a team parent who makes world-famous-on-Waiheke brownies?
A coach who burns sausages but sells them with charm?
A nana who can produce 47 dozen scones in under an hour?
WE WANT YOU. 🙌

And the best part?
⭐ It’s 100% FREE to have a stall
⭐ Your group keeps every dollar you make
⭐ Your food fuels the island (literally)

We’re talking:
🌭 Sausages sizzling like they’re auditioning for a commercial
🍰 Cakes that may or may not survive the trip from home
🍔 Burgers built with love (and guesswork)
🍬 Lollies to bribe children
🥤 Cold drinks to revive parents
🍟 Chips — because chips make everything better
