September was World Alzheimer's Month and our CEO celebrated by attending the Alzheimers New Zealand conference this week. A few things she heard:
'Properly investing in community support keeps older people out of hospital and residential care. Plus, 1 MONTH of home support costs the same as 1 WEEK in residential care and 1 NIGHT in hospital.'
'There are better drug treatments for dementia coming and diagnosis is getting simpler, so the focus needs to stay on better understanding, earlier diagnosis and slowing the disease.'
'Hope for the future is local ideas generated by enthusiastic people who don't wait for the government to properly fund services.'
She also got to connect with the team at Age Brightly who will be participating in Waiheke Health Trust's next community education session - Understanding Dementia: Knowledge, Hope and Community Solutions on 4 November. More info coming soon!
