There are lovely surprises in every corner of the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark.

Be sure to venture inside the beautiful St Martin’s Anglican Church in Duntroon to find your own precious little ‘Martie the Mouse’ 🐭 to take on your travels.

You might even find his other little friends along the way in other Anglican Churches.

💬 - Let's talk about the future, Waitaki

The future of local government is being shaped right now — and this is our chance to help decide what it looks like for Waitaki.

As the Government’s Simplifying Local Government reforms get underway, we have a rare opportunity to shape representation in a way that is sustainable, affordable, and fit for future generations. But to make sure Waitaki’s voice is strong and well-informed, we need to hear from you.

Your views will help ensure every perspective is considered as we prepare our submission.

Waitaki District Council will hold four community meetings to discuss the Government’s proposed Simplifying Local Government reforms.

These will begin with a panel discussion with the Mayor, the Chief Executive, and community representatives; Otto Dogterom and Justin Tipa, followed by a Q and A.

The meetings will take place on;
• Monday 22 June 2026 – Otematata Community Hall – 6.30pm
• Thursday 25 June 2026 – Palmerston Sports Centre – 6.30pm
• Monday 29 June 2026 – Union Rugby Club, Ngapara – 6.30pm
• Wednesday 1 July 2026 – Oamaru Opera House Auditorium – 6.30pm

The Global Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System links science, warning centres and communities through a coordinated, intergovernmental framework.

Led by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the system connects regional and national tsunami warning centres, monitoring networks and emergency authorities across all ocean basins.

It relies on four Intergovernmental Coordination Groups (ICGs) to coordinate regional tsunami warning and mitigation activities:

🔵 Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System
🔵 Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System
🔵 Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the North-Eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Seas
🔵 Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions

They promote, organise, and coordinate activities, as well as issue timely information, to help communities prepare for tsunamis and mitigate risks.

This collective effort is part of the Ocean Decade’s vision for a Safe Ocean - where science, cooperation, and early warning help protect lives and build resilient coasts.

Just one more amazing activity that can be enjoyed in the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark!

Whilst you’re enjoying the snow take in the great vistas of the glacial carved valley now occupied by Lake Ōhau.

This week we join in celebrating National Volunteers Week!

The Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark is the only UNESCO Geopark in Oceania and one of only 241 in the world.🌍

This MIGHTY achievement has only been possible because of the dedication and commitment of the volunteers and the discretionary voluntary hours given by many others over decades.

This includes the founders and volunteers of the Museum of the Vanished World, the voluntary Board Trustees, the landowners who have developed their properties to support access to Geosites, the staff who have gone above and beyond and the academics and experts up and down the country who generously provide the academic underpinning on which the Geopark relies - including giving guest lectures, hosting field trips and contributing to exhibition material and signage.

We give a heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers, supporters and friends across the community and wider who have made and continue to make our UNESCO Geopark so great. We couldn’t do it without you 🙏

Out and about in the beautiful Oamaru Public Gardens this morning with Lindsay Hyde, Recreation Specialist for the Waitaki District Council.

Lindsay looks almost as happy as we are about the planned installation of a new UNESCO Geopark sign highlighting the mysterious Plesiosaur.

Thanks Lindsay great start to the day!

These tidy kiwi’s earned a very special reward this morning as they picked up the most rubbish in our school last week. This was a clever competition created by Leah and Lauren. THANK-YOU team, for keeping our school looking rather sharp 🤩 🧼
