Artist Stories: Marc McGavick 🏺
Marc is an artist known for his expressive, layered artworks that celebrate the power of mark-making. Working with oil pastels and charcoal, Marc crafts detailed compositions, with each stroke contributing to a beautiful unfolding narrative. Inspired by Renaissance art and the intricacies of Old Master paintings, his practice is a celebration of the tactile act of working by hand.
Marc describes himself as a "very curious kid" who found inspiration in the people, places, and objects around him. It is this curiosity that continues to shape his practice today. His work is deeply intuitive, with layers of oil pastel and charcoal building over time to reveal unexpected forms and stories. Marc shares how the tactile act of mark-making has become a way of “reconnecting with both my body and myself” helping him find “a sense of flow” and allowing his work to unfold organically. Through this process, he has discovered the therapeutic power of art as a tool for healing and self-expression.
An active member of Magenta, art has become a powerful anchor in Marc's life, providing a sense of purpose and authentic self-expression. Having navigated the challenges of addiction, Marc shares how the encouragement of tutors Aniquah and Amy, and the collaborative nature of Magenta, have offered him a safe space to be seen as himself and reconnect with his creativity. "The support here has been invaluable," he reflects. "Showing up every day in the studio gives me purpose. I want to share just how much this place has helped me. I am comfortable being seen and being me here," he shares.
His Favourite quote, which resonates deeply with is art practice, is by Rainer Maria Rilke - 'Work of the eyes is done, now go and do heart-work on all the images imprisoned within you.'
