Birthright NZ is asking every political party to commit to four practical actions for children and families in the first 100 days of the next Government.

Life can feel overwhelming at any age, and having the right support and connection around you can help build the confidence to move forward.

This is one young person’s story of navigating social anxiety, stepping outside their comfort zone and finding their way through. The reflections in the video show how powerful it is when someone simply backs you, highlighting his shift from quiet isolation to genuine confidence. The insight that people’s reactions fade and aren’t a barrier to connection reflects growing resilience and a stronger sense of self.

Kauri's journey signals the impact of steady, non‑judgemental support. Whether that backing came from a mentor, a kaimahi, or someone in his life, the message is clear 'feeling backed creates safety and safety creates confidence'.

The video also reinforces Birthright’s relational approach and stands as a good example of the everyday relationship‑based mahi across our affiliates.

Created as part of Birthright New Zealand’s Digital Storytelling Workshop, supporting rangatahi to develop the skills and confidence to share authentic stories on their own terms.

A house fire. Homelessness. Starting over in a new town with a young family.

When life felt overwhelming, Birthright provided practical support, budgeting advice, community connections and a helping hand to get back on track. Sometimes the greatest difference is knowing someone cares and that you're not facing it alone.

For 70 years, Birthright has walked alongside families through some of life's toughest moments, helping them find stability, connection and hope for the future.

In this real and raw story, Adrian reflects on what that support meant to him, the impact it had on his life, and shares some advice from everything he’s learned along the way.

After Adrian's his parents migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand, he lost his father at a young age. Through the challenges that followed, Birthright was there, supporting him and his mum, creating opportunities, and helping him experience what he describes as getting his “birth right” back.

Stories like his are part of Birthright’s history and we know there are many more out there.

Meet the Team 💚

This week, we’re introducing our Social Worker, Emma — and the timing is perfect, as this month marks an amazing 9 years since Emma joined the Birthright Kāpiti team!

Emma is a Registered Social Worker and has been practising since 2004. At Birthright Kāpiti, she provides one-to-one support to solo parents and whānau, facilitates many of our groups and workshops, and delivers Triple P parenting support and courses.

Over the past nine years, Emma has supported many families through the challenges (and joys!) of solo parenting, helping parents feel heard, supported and more connected to their community.

We’re very lucky to have Emma as part of our team — happy 9-year anniversary, Emma! 💚
