The Alternative Brand Allowance (ABA) provides a pathway to receive funding for a device that Pharmac does not currently fund. This is an acknowledgement that the currently funded CGMs and insulin pumps for those eligible to receive funding may not be clinically suitable in every case.

Your health care provider (e.g. diabetes nurse specialist, GP or another prescribing clinician) completes an exceptional circumstances application and evidence of genuine clinical need beyond personal preference is essential. You can find out more about this on the Pharmac website.

A couple of weeks ago, I attended the New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD) Annual Scientific Conference, which included a technology day, followed by multiple seminars throughout the week covering a wide range of important topics.

It was an intense and rewarding week, and I’ve come away with even greater insight into the complexities of managing type 1 diabetes, as well as a deeper understanding of the mental health challenges many people living with this autoimmune condition can experience.

A special acknowledgement to our local Diabetes Clinical team at Villa 16 for their excellent presentation on skin irritation management and skin care. It was incredibly informative and highlighted practical strategies that will benefit so many people navigating diabetes technology.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to attend, learn, connect, and bring this knowledge back to support our local diabetes community.

🤧Protect yourself from the flu this winter

The 2026 flu vaccine is now available, and if you have diabetes, you will be eligible for a free flu vaccine. It's really important to get a flu vaccination if you have diabetes, because the flu can make you very unwell. It's also important that you get vaccinated before winter, when flu viruses are circulating most.
It takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective, and even if you have received it in previous years, you should still get it every year to make sure you are protected.
