These lovely humans who come together to pot up seedlings to koha to our foodbanks each week at the Kokiri Marae Pātaka Kai

We know that free seedlings enable whānau to give growing their own kai a go. We know that the price of seedlings is too much for many.
What we would like to learn from you our community is where else we can be distributing our seedlings to? Not all whānau use foodbanks but still need support. Where are the places around our city that could be a pick up zone?

Help us make a seedling distribution map to ensure our whānau gets fed, this Winter.

When Councils do not set aside land or protect it from development, this is what happens .
And with less access to kai due to fuel costs, how are whānau able to feed themselves?

Our Māra Sister Lana has taken up a new role with us and it's a bit cool!
Since our community greenhouse at Pōmare got smashed to bits in a recent storm we have been aware of the gap this leaves for whānau who rely on accessing our seedlings from our partnering foodbanks.

Lana is now operating the community seedling programme alongside our mates at Kokiri Marae Pātaka Kai with a dedicated greenhouse and new distribution system.
From next week our seedlings will be available again from Lower Hutt Foodbank , Pomare Taita Community House and Kokiri Pataka.
We know that providing free seedlings is removing a barrier for many whānau to give growing a go, and have many stories of whānau having great success, learning from their tamariki who often learn to grow kai at school/kura, and often are able to return their homegrown kai back to their foodbank/pataka.

Lana runs a potting up session at the Pataka each Wednesday, please come on down and give a hand - it really means so much to so many.

We are proud to be partnering with Takiri Mai te Ata Homelessness Prevention Services and Petone Baptist Church to open this beautiful house to serve whānau in need of housing support.
Owned and upgraded by the Church, this lovely old villa has become a place to support whānau with wrap around services and care when facing housing challenges.
He Puāwai will create meals here that can be distributed to those sleeping rough, in cars or needing kai support, utilizing the māra kai space at the house.
A beautiful collaboration to serve whānau, a place of care and kindness.
Ngā mihi nui to Petone Baptist Church for their generosity and service to community.

Our Māra Sister Lana(left) at Pōmare Pomare Taita Community House with the House Coordinator Jasmine.
We've been working hard together to hand back the care and development of the Pōmare Māra Ora by supporting Jasmine and the Pomare Taita Community House whānau to hold this space themselves and lead their own kai initiatives. What a cool journey it has been!

We are so proud to announce that Jasmine will now be leading and Lana stepping away to focus on new projects (details to come) Jasmine and the house whānau have exciting plans to further develop their space and we remain their biggest supporters, cheering them on from the sidelines.
To become involved with their new kaupapa, drop by and see Jasmine, she would love to hear from you.
