House of Science Wellington

House of Science Wellington Your local House of Science centre for the Wellington region. We love seeing science come alive in Wellington classrooms! Why?

Previously called 'Hutt Science', this page was renamed House of Science Wellington to reflect the expanded area it now serves. We work by resourcing and supporting local educators and students and promoting linkages between schools, tertiary institutions and science and technology employers in Lower Hutt. To support student engagement and achievement in science and technology, with the goal of inspiring more young people from Hutt Valley schools to go on to further education and employment in this exciting field. To enrich science education in Hutt City by creating the conditions for innovative and productive networking across the education, science and technology communities.

Did you know our House of Science Wellington region extends all the way to the mighty Chatham Islands? We love being able to support the amazing teachers at Te One, Kaingaroa, and Pitt Island School.

Here's a snapshot of some of the exciting science mahi happening at Te One School this term. What a fantastic job, team. Ka rawe, team! Keep up the great work

Ngā mihi o Te Wiki o te Reo Māori!

All House of Science kits are available in both English and te reo Māori, and are used by schools and kura across Aotearoa. Here's a great idea from one kura, labelling their Earth Structure diagram in te reo Māori. We love seeing science and te reo learning go hand in hand. Ka mau te wehi!

If you’ve got pāua shells, we've got a science kit that needs them 📏✏️

Got pāua shells? This one’s for you!
Pāua shells are seldom thrown away – with such a gorgeous shimmer, people tend to keep them for jewellery, crafts or garden pieces. Now there’s an even better way to repurpose them – helping to educate Kiwi kids about the importance of measurement 📏🔬
We welcome donations of pāua shells for our science kit ‘Measurement Matters / Te Whakahirahira o te Inenga’. It explores different types of measurement and why it matters, including an exercise on how to correctly measure shellfish.
Your donations can help foster the skills to catch a feed rather than a fine, and educate the next generation on keeping New Zealand fisheries sustainable 🎣🌊
Got shells to spare? 📧 Email [email protected] – we'll arrange collection, or you can drop them at your nearest House of Science regional centre.

It’s NZ Maths Week! 🎉

Did you know that many of our House of Science kits are packed with rich, hands-on mathematical learning opportunities?

Think integration – science gives maths a real-world purpose and context. :)

Science investigations naturally involve:

Measuring length, volume, time, and temperature
Counting, sorting, and recording data
Graphing results and interpreting findings
Identifying patterns and making predictions

Why not book a kit for the next cycle? Get in touch if you'd like suggestions that connect with the maths concepts you're teaching right now, or use a science context to revisit and reinforce skills your students have already explored this year.

Last week we had a special celebration, with huge thanks to Volunteer Wellington Te Puna Tautoko.
Our Hutt and Wellington House of Science Volunteer Team was chosen as a recipient of the Mahi Aroha morning tea shout. :)
Here is part of the nomination:
This was a group of over 15 dedicated volunteers whose commitment has had an incredible impact on science education across our region.
Their role has been to replenish, maintain, and distribute over 40 hands-on science kits each cycle, ensuring schools have high-quality resources that are ready to use in classrooms.
What makes this team truly exceptional is their unwavering dedication. A couple of the Hutt volunteers have been with House of Science for more than 10 years!
They are caring, hardworking, and bring a sense of fun that makes them an absolute pleasure to work alongside. With the big merge recently, we have lost a number of these volunteers (especially from Wellington) but we want to acknowledge them as well!

An outstanding team and incredibly deserving of this nomination!

Exciting times! We’re now all settled into our new base in Avalon, which is home to the Wellington Regional Branch—a merger of our Wellington, Hutt Valley, Horowhenua, and Wairarapa branches.
:) We have a new Regional Manager, Bob Maxwell, along with Alison and Jono as Resource Assistants, and Kristina managing stock inventory.

We’re currently looking for a Resource Assistant to join the team. The role is part-time (hours to be negotiated) and involves delivering kits across the Wellington region and replenishing them.
If you’re interested—or know someone who might be—please email Bob at [email protected].
