We meet every 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Wednesday in the month at Lincoln Event Centre on Meijer Drive. New and prospective members always welcome.

At Liffey Toastmasters we are a high performing club with a succesful history of achievement both on a club and individual level dating back to 1999. Our meetings are friendly, fun and supportive, with a superb atmosphere for new, begineer, and experienced members to learn and develop their speaking and leadership skills and build self confidence. Celebrating Young Speakers in Selwyn!

Five members of Liffey Toastmasters— Barry, Jenny, Antonia, Mia, and Gloria —were delighted to be invited to judge the Year 7 and 8 Selwyn Lions Speech Competition.

A total of 30 talented students from schools across Selwyn participated—15 students in the Year 7 competition and 15 in the Year 8 competition. The standard of the speeches was excellent, with interesting topics, thoughtful ideas, and very confident presentations. We were truly impressed by the courage and ability of these young speakers!

After the competition, Jenny and Barry provided valuable and encouraging feedback to the Year 7 and Year 8 students respectively.

Congratulations to every student who participated, and thank you to Selwyn Lions for organising such a wonderful event. Liffey Toastmasters was proud to support and encourage the next generation of confident speakers!

As we reach the end of August, we look back with gratitude— it has been a time of celebration for the Liffey Toastmasters Club. 🎉🎉🎉

David Templeman— one of New Zealand’s most distinguished Toastmasters— fittingly opened the month as our Toastmaster for Week 1, where we recognised the members who helped us achieve the highly coveted Smedley Distinguished Club Award. 🏆

We end on another high, with our co-President, Jess Love, winning the 2026 University of Canterbury Three Minute Thesis competition. 🥇

In between were many smaller wins— including being part of the journey of Lincoln University’s 3MT participants. We celebrate them, too, for taking those steps. 👣👣👣

And, of course, the steps we— Toasties— take every week as we learn from one another— those, too, are wins. 🚶🚶‍♀️

Just as choosing to begin your own public speaking journey is a win. 🏁

Here’s to August— a month's worth of celebrations, and many more wins ahead. 🥂

📣📣📣The Liffey Toastmasters Club is incredibly proud and honoured to congratulate our co-President, Jess Love, on winning the University of Canterbury 3 Minute Thesis Award 2026.🥳🥳🥳

“Wicked! Flawless! Powerful! Effective! Delivered with empathy! Terrific audience engagement!”

These are just some of the words our members used to describe her performance. All superlatives!

From Myles Morris, a long-time Club member:

“Wow, that speech was E p I c! From the surprising pregnant pause when you were asking the audience to talk without speaking, to when you, at one stage, nearly took off in full flight across the audience. Sensational!”

Ever gracious and generous, Jess reflected on her 3MT journey and some of the people who supported her along the way:

"I originally joined Toastmasters with the goal of entering the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) in 2025, although I probably left it a bit late. I had a few months, and I suddenly realised just how much there was to learn. I entered the 2025 competition and placed second, but by then I was hooked— on improving, and, more importantly, on the Liffey community. A club full of incredible speakers who all, altruistically, want to help each other improve is something pretty special.

So I stayed. I went to my first Humorous Speech contest and learnt a lot. My biggest takeaway has been how much you can purposefully do to engage an audience, and that these are all skills you can learn. I also found there are two parts to a great speech: crafting and delivery. Liffey helped me with the crafting, through individual mentors giving me feedback and the club evaluating my speeches.

And on the night of this year's final, the club helped with my delivery too. Having Liffey members there to support me, and seeing their faces in the crowd while I was speaking, was the most incredible confidence boost.

This year, I won.

I'm so grateful for all of the club's support and encouragement. Thank you, Liffey."

Liffey Toastmasters held its annual "Three-Minute Thesis" meeting, hosting nine PhD students preparing for Lincoln University’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

The students are challenged to answer a seemingly simple question-- ‘What are you researching?’-- in no more than three minutes, using just one presentation slide. They need to pitch their presentation to non-academic audience, forcing them to skip the jargon and focus on what really matters about their research. In doing so, they get valuable practice in both research communication and public speaking.

Nine Liffey Toasties were there to listen and provide feedback. As former Club President Claire Tee noted, “Liffey has improved in evaluating and giving useful feedback to 3MT speeches over the years.”

And that is perhaps one of the best things about these meetings. As we continue to help others on their public speaking journey, helping them find their voice, we, too, continue to improve ourselves.

It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a lively research communication competition initially developed by the University of Queensland and now held annually at more than 900 universities across the globe.

This year, 32 Lincoln University research students signed up for the challenge. Twelve finalists have been selected and will compete on Thursday, 20 August, in the Ross Building at 5.30 pm.

The highest-placed PhD contestant will represent the university at the 3MT Asia-Pacific virtual competition, reaching an international audience.

As is now almost an annual tradition, Liffey Toastmasters headed to Lincoln University to conduct a workshop for the Three Minute Thesis, or 3MT.

The 3MT is a competition in which master’s and PhD students have the opportunity to share their research in just three minutes.

Two of Liffey Toastmasters’ finest—Antonia, our resident 3MT expert, current Club co-President and three-time former competitor, and Jenny, Toastie extraordinaire—led the workshop and helped the students strengthen their presentation skills.

The Club plans to continue supporting students as they prepare their thesis presentations, as well as helping them develop their public speaking skills in general. If needed, upcoming Club meetings will also be dedicated to helping more students refine their presentations and build their confidence.

We have to admit: a Liffey Toastmasters meeting, although always educational, is also a night full of fun and laughter—with awesome speeches, always-challenging Table Topics questions, and some of the most encouraging and enlightening evaluations you will encounter on your public speaking journey.

So, what does it take to make a Liffey Toastie serious?

Bring out a board game or two and wait for the competitive spirit to appear.

That is exactly what happened over the weekend when a number of us headed to Sam, and Jess's home for our midwinter get-together.

It may be the most serious you will ever see us—racking our brains to give one-word clues that connect as many code words as possible, or turning into Neanderthals and giving clues using only one-syllable words. Accidentally use a longer word, and you earn a well-deserved bonk!

We kid, of course.

Whether we are at a meeting or a social gathering, we always know how to strike the perfect balance between fun and seriousness. After all, our shared goal is to help each other grow, and have fun while doing it.

This week's meeting took members into a world where robots had infiltrated Liffey Toastmasters Club. Inspired by Isaac Asimov's Zeroth Law of Robotics, the evening blended science fiction, Robot and AI trivia, and plenty of laughter as everyone tried to uncover the identities of the Robot Infiltrators before it was too late.

Fortunately, Minh Thu saved the day! She deciphered the riddle and presented her findings to the club, helping us foil the attempted Robot infiltration. The real Helen, and Barry Lee Hayes were returned to us safe and sound, eager to continue mentoring our Toasties.

In addition, Thu was one of the evening's three speakers. Her speech, "A New Beginning," was delivered powerfully and offered thoughtful insights into adapting to life in New Zealand.

Joining Thu on the speaking roster were Val Keown, and Phyo Thuzar. Val delivered her Ice-Breaker -- her very first Toastmasters speech-- which was entitled "Just When You Thought You Had Everything You Need," where she shared the story behind her hand-crafted bags. Meanwhile, Phyo presented "My Life, My Choice," a Level 2, Project 1 speech that explored and reflected on her leadership style.

Gloria Hao opened the second half of the meeting as our Table Topics Master, posing a series of her trademark thought-provoking questions, including: "Should we allow robots to compete in speech competitions?" Participants enthusiastically shared their perspectives, once again demonstrating why Table Topics remains the most popular segment of a Liffey Toastmasters meeting.

This week’s agenda was all about agendas.

Our new co-VP Education, Helen Pullar, who also served as this week’s Toastmaster, made it the first item on her 2026 agenda to raise the club’s agenda awareness.

Also on the night’s agenda was the induction of our newest Liffey Toastie, Jonah Belk. Jonah joined to gain more experience in public speaking and become more comfortable presenting in front of people, especially in his current role.

Whew, that’s enough agendas for one week. Fortunately, there are no hidden agendas among our members—just a shared agenda to help everyone grow and improve.
