Ever tried speaking about something completely unexpected… on the spot?

That’s exactly what Table Topics is all about.

In Toastmasters, Table Topics is the impromptu speaking section where participants are given a surprise prompt and 1–2 minutes to respond. No preparation, no notes, just your thoughts in the moment. It’s a space to think on your feet, explore ideas out loud, and build confidence in spontaneous speaking.

Last week, our prompt invited us to speak to a piece of abstract art. It pushed us to interpret, imagine, and create meaning in real time. What started as “just a prompt” turned into stories, reflections, and a few surprising perspectives.

Table Topics isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about giving it a go, finding your voice, and discovering what you’re capable of when you trust yourself to speak.

Would you take the challenge?

What a fantastic weekend at the Area C5 Toastmasters Contest in Ashburton!

Clubs represented included Oaklands, Hornby, Liffey, Lincoln Research, Ashburton, and Alpine, with a wonderful atmosphere of encouragement, learning, and friendly competition across all events.

We are incredibly proud of our members’ achievements:
🥈🥉 Celina – 2nd place Evaluation, 3rd place Table Topics
🥈 Helen – 2nd place, International Speech
🥈 Jess – 2nd place, Humorous Speech

A huge thank you also goes to the many members who supported the event and helped make it run smoothly. These contests rely on teamwork, and we were lucky to have so many people contributing:

• Antoine – Contest Chair (Table Topics) and Judge
• Fred and Sam – Timekeepers
• Leon and David – Sergeant at Arms support
• Barry, Claire, and Antoine – Judging team
• Gloria – Ballot Counter

It was wonderful to see such strong representation, collaboration, and club spirit across the area. Congratulations to everyone who competed, volunteered, and supported. Events like this truly showcase the growth, courage, and community that Toastmasters is all about.

Ever wondered what the Pathways programme in Toastmasters is?

Pathways is a personalised learning journey. You choose a path based on what you want to get better at, whether that’s confidence, leadership, storytelling, or professional speaking.

Here’s a quick guide to the main options:

🔹 Dynamic Leadership - great if you want to lead teams, manage projects, or grow your leadership confidence at work or in the community.
Example: Running events, leading meetings, managing volunteers.

🎭 Engaging Humour - perfect if you want to be funnier, more relatable, or more entertaining when you speak.
Example: Adding humour to presentations, speeches, or training sessions.

⛰️ Motivational Strategies - ideal if you want to inspire people or become a more effective coach or mentor.
Example: Teaching, coaching, or leading teams through change.

🧠 Persuasive Influence - choose this if you want to influence decisions, negotiate, or communicate ideas more convincingly.
Example: Sales, advocacy, leadership conversations, pitching ideas.

🎤 Presentation Mastery - great for anyone who wants to become a confident, polished speaker.
Example: Work presentations, weddings, or conference speaking.

🔭 Visionary Communication - best if you want to communicate big ideas or lead with vision.
Example: Strategic leadership, innovation, or thought leadership.

The best part? You don’t need to be 'good at speaking' to start. Come join us tonight at the Lincoln Events Centre, Todd Lounge, 7:25pm – 9:00pm to find out more. Pathways is designed to help you grow step by step.

Which path sounds most like you?

We are proud to celebrate one of our members, David Templeman, who was awarded his third Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) last year. This is the highest level of educational achievement in Toastmasters, and earning it once is remarkable. Earning it three times reflects years of commitment, leadership, and service to others.

The DTM is not just about giving great speeches. It recognises members who have developed advanced communication and leadership skills and then used those skills to support clubs, mentor members, and strengthen the wider Toastmasters community.

To earn a DTM, a member must:
• Complete two learning paths
• Serve as a club officer and contribute to club planning and officer training
• Serve a full year as a District leader
• Successfully mentor or coach a club
• Sponsor a club or deliver a Speechcraft or Youth Leadership programme
• Design and complete a large-scale leadership project

Having someone with this level of experience in our club means access to an incredible depth of knowledge, guidance, and mentorship. It is a reminder that Toastmasters is not just about personal growth, but about lifting others as you grow.

Congratulations David on an outstanding achievement. We are very lucky to have you as part of our club!

What Are Toastmasters Contests?
Toastmasters holds a series of speech contests each year to help members grow their confidence and communication skills. At the club level, members can take part in four contest types:
🎤 International Speech – inspirational, prepared speeches that advance to an international round
😄 Humorous Speech – speeches designed to entertain
💡 Table Topics – impromptu speaking on the spot
📝 Evaluation – providing a precise, constructive evaluation of a test speaker
Contests aren’t just about placing, they’re about stepping up, challenging yourself, and celebrating the courage it takes to speak.
Congratulations to Our Club Contestants! A massive well done to everyone who participated, supported, and cheered at our club contests. 🏆 Winners now advance to the Area Contests. We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see you shine on the next stage!

Another new member in August! Welcoming Myles!

Myles joins Liffey Toastmasters to help with his passion in talking (too much) and being too enthusiastic. I am sure Toastmasters pathways projects could make his presentation more concise and effective. Speech evaluations given by members would be helpful too!

Our next meeting is on 3rd of Sep, Wed at 7.30pm.
