An active group of potters from around Christchurch. The gallery is open weekends 11am-3pm. New members very welcome. We even have a pizza oven!

We have a wide selection of firing facilities including electric, gas and wood-burning kilns, a salt kiln, and a Japanese--style anagama kiln. We also do regular raku firings, pit firing and barrel firing. We have a limited selection of made up glazes for member's use. As well as running wheel and hand-work classes, we host workshops and arrange local gallery or exhibition visits. Club day is Monday. To contact us email [email protected]

There’s something magical about creating a piece of pottery and then watching a bird discover it. These handmade birdbaths and feeder trays offer birds a simple place to stop, drink, bathe, or feed, while also becoming beautiful sculptural features in the garden. Each piece is individually handmade, with carved, stamped, and incised details that celebrate the clay's natural character. The best part? For Cynthia Cripps, the answer is almost everywhere.

These diverse influences find their way into Cynthia’s ceramics, creating work that is imaginative, thoughtful, and full of character.

There’s more than one way to make a pot!
One of the things that makes Cynthia Cripps’ work so interesting is the variety of ways she approaches clay.

She enjoys throwing on the wheel, hand-building, and sculpting, moving between techniques depending on the idea she wants to explore.

Sometimes a form begins on the wheel. Sometimes it is built entirely by hand. And sometimes one technique becomes the starting point for another.

For Cynthia, the process is part of the adventure. Each technique offers a different way to explore shape and form—and each presents its own opportunities to learn something new.

For Cynthia Cripps, inspiration can be found right outside the studio door.

The garden and natural world are an important part of her creative inspiration, providing endless ideas through organic shapes, textures, growth, movement, and colour.

But Cynthia’s work isn’t simply about copying what she sees. Instead, she takes those observations and transforms them through clay, creating her own interpretations and imaginative forms.

For Cynthia Cripps, it often results in a new piece of pottery—and a new skill!

From the wheel to sculpture…

Cynthia Cripps doesn’t see the pottery wheel as the end of the creative process—it can be just the beginning.

While Cynthia enjoys throwing on the wheel, she often uses wheel-thrown pieces as a starting point for sculptural work, transforming and developing the original form into something entirely different.

She also loves hand-building and sculpting, giving her the freedom to explore shape, texture, movement, and character in ways that aren’t always possible on the wheel.

The result is pottery that goes beyond traditional forms and explores the expressive possibilities of clay.
