Here’s the week ahead at Rural Leaders.

The Rural Leaders Team and Nuffield Trustees are holding the 2027 Nuffield NZ Farming Scholarship interviews over the next two days.

The successful scholars will be awarded their scholarships at Parliament in Wellington on 3 November.

Applications for 2027 Kellogg Programme One 2027 are open until 25 October 2026. This leaves just three weeks to lock in your place to graduate with your Kellogg in the first half of next year.

What happens when farmers do everything they can to build resilience on farm, but remain exposed to what happens beyond the farm gate?

For 2024 Value Chain Innovation participant Emma Crutchley, this was a question she’d been considering for years.

At Puketoi in Central Otago, Emma and Kyle have focused on profitability, diversification, environmental monitoring and building longer-term resilience.

But Emma saw a gap between farmers’ appetite to lead change and their understanding of how markets and supply chains work.

The Value Chain Innovation Programme gave Emma the opportunity to explore that gap and to better understand the forces shaping New Zealand agriculture.

An “Agri-optimist”, Emma came away with a stronger understanding of the world beyond the farm gate and the importance of looking outward when building a resilient business.

2026 Kellogg Programme Two (K56) wrapped up their Phase Two last week in Wellington. They meet up again in Lincoln, 16 November, for Phase Three and graduation.

Applications for the 2027 Value Chain Innovation Programme are now open.

Running from 31 January to 6 February, the programme starts in Napier and finishes in Hamilton.

Get behind the scenes of the apple, dairy and kiwifruit industries, with insights from leaders and founders across these sectors, alongside perspectives from red meat and technology.

What a week of learning for the HortNZ Leadership Programme cohort, and it’s not over yet.

Phase One wraps up this afternoon for our 16 emerging and established horticulture leaders.

They’ve spent the week soaking up the knowledge, experience and insights of our generous presenters.

A huge thank you to all of the presenters, session leads and to our facilitator, Erin Simpson, for bringing it all together.

The cohort will be back together in Wellington on 21 October for Phase Two, and graduation.
