Welcome to A Balancing Act of Colour and Form, featuring the work of Rebecca McMaster, Maya Wypych and W***y Roberts.

Bringing together three talented artists, this exhibition explores the world of abstract art through individual styles, bold colours and intriguing compositions.

Whether you’re drawn to a particular colour, the shapes within a piece, or the way an artwork makes you feel, there is plenty to discover as you explore the exhibition.

Sometimes an artwork connects with us for reasons we don’t immediately understand.

It might remind us of a place we’ve been, someone we know, a memory we’ve carried, or simply evoke a feeling that stays with us.

The final weekend of Tether is here 🌿

Bringing together the work of the Echo and Edge Collective, Carmen Collie, Belinda Currie and Pippa Mills, this exhibition explores the many ways we are connected to people, places, memories and the world around us.

Through printmaking and jewellery, each artist offers their own interpretation of connection, attachment, memory and belonging.

If you haven’t had a chance to experience Tether yet, this is the final weekend to spend some time with the exhibition.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: BELINDA CURRIE

For “Tethered” I have made a series of multi-layer monoprints of Awaroa, Te Piaki –
Lyttelton Heads – their forms holding the line between shelter and the open sea. I see the horizon stretch between them – a seam that tethers sky to sea, past to present, home to away.

I work in layers: colour over colour, mark over mark. Each pass through the press builds depth and complexity. The translucency of the inks catches the shifting light, echoing the harbour’s own changes – tide, weather, season – yet the headlands remain – steadfast. Memory overlays itself on place, and time leaves its quiet marks, anchoring us more deeply to the landscape.

The horizon is central to this exploration. It is a constant line – a visual anchor, in a shifting world. It is the end point that holds our gaze but also suggests the possibility of what lies beyond. The horizon functions as a tether - a line that connects rather than divides, holding in place the elements of sky, sea and land.

Ultimately the horizon becomes more than a compositional device: it is a metaphor for connection. It links here and now with past and future, home and away. Each print captures a moment in this unique environment, inviting the viewer to feel the invisible lines that connect us to place.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: PIPPA MILLS

We are tethered to the land we live on; to it’s contours, it’s textures and it’sHistory Tether began at Onawe, right in the middle of Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula where I live. I gathered fragments of local basalt on the beach there, drawn to their darkness and weight. These souvenirs of the place have travelled from the landscape into my pieces, alongside wood, silver and bronze. There is something compelling about taking a piece of place and carrying it
with you. Both physically and symbolically it is an anchor, a reminder, a connection. These pieces are small acts of connection. Basalt, wood, silver and bronze come together to make objects that hold traces of the landscape - fragments of a place, tethered to the body.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Carmen Collie

In my work, ‘tether’ explores the visible and invisible ties that bind us to family, ancestry, culture and the histories we carry. Drawing on Polish, Scottish and Samoan connections, the work brings European and Pasifika

motifs into conversation. Lace, vases, rope, birds, family trees, and the stylised teuila flower become symbols of inheritance, adaptation and making a home between cultures. The vase becomes both surface and vessel: a place where memory, ceremony and grief are held close and reimagined. Rope speaks of attachment, closeness and strain, while birds suggest movement, migration and release. Together, these motifs hold the paradox of the tether: what secures us may also pull, and what roots us may also give us direction.

Through proximity, repetition and layering, these works ask how different lineages might meet without one absorbing the other. At its heart, ‘tether’ is an offering to the relationships that shape us — a tender holding together of many threads, where identity is formed through ancestry, care and belonging.

A familiar place, a treasured object, a person, or even a feeling can hold a surprising amount of meaning.

Tether explores these quiet connections through the work of the Echo and Edge Collective, Carmen Collie, Belinda Currie and Pippa Mills.

Each work offers a different perspective on connection, attachment, memory and place, leaving room for you to bring your own experiences and interpretations to what you see.
