Where would Horowhenua Volunteer Fire Brigade be without the employers who support our members when a call comes in?

Behind every volunteer who responds to an emergency is often an employer willing to adjust workloads, cover shifts, reshuffle meetings, or simply say, "Go."

Today, we would like to acknowledge and thank all of the employers who support our brigade members. Your willingness to allow staff to respond when our community needs them plays a vital role in keeping our community safe.

It’s raining. You knew that, though!

Please stay informed as this weather continues through our district and the entire region.

We know there have been a lot of weather updates across the country today. It can feel overwhelming, and we really appreciate you bearing with us.

Here is the latest information 🧠

We are watching a weather system that is expected to bring periods of heavy rain to Horowhenua from this evening.

There are two parts to this weather.
One is coming up from the south tonight.
The second is coming from the north overnight.
It’s coming at us from both ends, which is never a good sign… in weather or in life.

This means we may see heavy rain at times, and possibly thunderstorms. Once again, grab your thunder buddy.

Horowhenua is currently under a Heavy Rain Watch. Some places near us are under stronger warnings, including a Red Warning for Wellington and Orange for the Tararua Range, and that does have a flow-on effect for us.

Why we are paying close attention 👀
A lot of rain is expected in the Tararua Range. If that rain moves our way, it could cause rivers to rise, flooding in low areas, and slips on roads.

What we are doing 👇
We are watching the weather all the time.
Our teams are ready to respond if needed.
Emergency services are ready as well.
An emergency centre is on standby if things get worse.

As a safety step, Kimberley Reserve is closed.

The Moutoa floodgates may need to be used tomorrow if required, and as always, we will be sure to let you know.

When the rain may be heaviest
- Around midnight tonight
- Again early tomorrow morning, between 6am and 7am (Tuesday 21 April)

What you can do
- Clear leaves and rubbish from gutters and drains
- Bring in or tie down loose outdoor items (don't make me say it, rhymes with... rye mown four crambodine)
- Do not drive through floodwater
- Watch streams and drains near your home
- Check on neighbours if you can

We will keep updating you as we learn more. Our staff are going to be monitoring this and making sure you are kept informed.
