Horowhenua Volunteer Fire Brigade The Horowhenua Volunteer Fire Brigade is a specialist wildfire brigade, based out of the Levin Fire Station.

We are a specialist wildfire brigade, and typically respond to about 70 emergency calls per year. Most calls are to vegetation fires, but we’ll also respond to structure and vehicle fires in non-reticulated areas of the district or where 4WD access is required. We’ll get called out for severe weather events and all of our firefighters are trained as medical co-responders.

Daylight saving starts this weekend, and while you’re changing the clocks, or trying to work out when your kids should be going to bed, it’s a great time to give your smoke alarms a quick check too.

Take a moment to:
- Press the test button and make sure all your smoke alarms are working as expected.
- If your smoke alarm is looking a little old, check the expiry date as alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
- Ensure you have smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, hallway, and living area for the best chance to be woken up if a fire gets started.

Our brigade regularly trains behind the scenes to keep our skills fresh.

In this training session, we were working on how to safely fill a helicopter monsoon bucket during firefighting operations. When vegetation fires strike, helicopters can play a vital role in tackling fires from above, and our crews on the ground can help keep them supplied with water.

Our scenario-based training helps us build confidence, practice our skills, and ensure we're ready to work in any situation.

Could we get a fire truck to your property easily?

As we head towards the warmer months and the often busier fire season from our perspective, now is a good time to take a quick look at your property from our point of view.

Our fire trucks are big, wide, and heavy, and you would have seen one of them responding to a call in our previous reel. When we respond to an emergency, we need to be able to find you and get to you quickly.

Here’s a few things you can check or action now if needed to ensure your property is prepared:
• Make sure your street or RAPID number is clearly visible from the road, including at night.
• Trim back trees, branches and vegetation overhanging or narrowing your driveway.
• Check that gateways are wide and high enough for a fire truck to get through.
• Keep your driveway and turning areas clear of vehicles, trailers and other obstacles.
• If you have a long or rural driveway, think about whether there is somewhere for a large truck to turn around safely and quickly.
• Make sure gates can be opened quickly in an emergency.

When there’s a fire, every minute matters. A little preparation now can make a big difference to how quickly we can find you, reach your property and get to work.
