On Tuesday, the Iona Global Unity group arranged for an art exhibition from twelve Chinese cities to be brought into the school for one day only.

The IRC was taken over by these beautiful artworks completed by Chinese school students as young as nine years old. To add to the atmosphere, the Global Unity group ran fun Chinese themed activities where students had to choose a task from an envelope. Using chopsticks to move jellybeans between jars was the most popular!

Year 12 student, Emiri Chida created a video piece of students sharing their thoughts on the artwork to send back to the artists.

Well done to Global Unity for organising this interesting display where students were able to appreciate art from another culture and hopefully learnt something new about China πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³πŸ‰

Last Thursday, our Dance and Drama students attended Footnote Dance Company's "Modern God" performance at Toitoi.

The show was an inspiring experience, showcasing the incredible talent, creativity, and athleticism of New Zealand's contemporary dance artists. Students were captivated by the powerful storytelling, innovative choreography, and the way the performers brought emotion and meaning to the stage through movement.

Our students were fully engaged and left feeling inspired, motivated, and excited about their own creative journeys. It was fantastic to see them discussing their favourite moments, sharing their interpretations of the work, and reflecting on the skills and artistry they had witnessed.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend and know the experience will continue to inspire our young performers in their own dance and drama endeavours.

There was outstanding skill, teamwork and enthusiasm on show across all three codes throughout the two days of Junior Pent competition earlier this week βš½πŸ‘πŸ

We thank Woodford again for their hosting of this year's exchange, as well as another huge thank you to the Iona coaches and managers for their time and effort across the two days. The girls were incredibly well supported, and we are so appreciative of the commitment you all continue to show our sports teams πŸ™

Football came away with a 2nd placing, after strong wins against Nga Tawa (8-2), Samuel Marsden (5-0), and St Matthew's Collegiate (8-3), along with a loss to Woodford (1-6).

Netball finished in 3rd place, with two strong wins on Day 2 against St Matts (33-12) and Woodford (26-14), after two losses on day 1 to Nga Tawa (16-25) and Samuel Marsden (24-30).

Hockey also claimed 3rd placing, after a draw (1-1) with Woodford, a (4-1) win against Nga Tawa, a close loss to St Matts (1-2) and a winning end to the tournament (4-0) against Samuel Marsden.

Iona claimed 24 points overall, to narrowly miss out on the title by 1 point to eventual winners, Woodford. We look forward to the 2027 version of Junior Pent, with an away trip to Samuel Marsden in Wellington.

Yesterday, the Iona College SAFE group (promoting equality, inclusivity and safety within the school), ran a colourful bake sale raising awareness for Schools' Pride Week Aotearoa πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

The day was a huge success and the group raised over $200 for InsideOUT - a national charity providing education and support for anything concerning rainbow and takatāpui communities.

The sun was out so no chance for a real rainbow but the strong sense of belonging more than made up for it 🌈

Last week, Year 11 Drama students welcomed Dr. James Wenley, a senior lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies from Victoria University of Wellington, into their class.

Dr. Wenley ran an immersive, hands-on acting and characterisation workshop. Our students dove deep into the mechanics of performance, exploring how physical choices, vocal dynamics, and subtext bring a script to life. It was a masterclass in empathy and technique, challenging the Year 11s to think critically about written scripts and truly inhabit the characters they create.

As an esteemed director, dramaturg, writer, and performer, Dr. Wenley brought a wealth of professional industry insight right into our classroom. It was an invaluable opportunity for our students to learn from a leading creative professional, showcasing not only the power of storytelling but also the diverse career pathways available in the Arts 🎭🎬✍

Thank you to HOD Performing Arts and Drama Teacher, Ruby Masom for organising this enriching visit!

Last week, Iona students, Olivia Kee and Elizabeth Guo performed with Emily Li from Napier Girls High School as the Delibes Trio at the Chamber Music District Competition held in The Blyth Performing Arts Centre.

They played the Flower Duet from LakmΓ© by LΓ©o Delibes, and The Kegelstatt Trio K 498 by W. A. Mozart.

The trio were praised by the judges for their "gorgeous soaring melodies", "a confident performance that delivered poise," and their "wonderful organic communication throughout."

Well done girls on your beautiful performance and a huge thank you to Iona College Music Teacher, Lindsay Coxen for supporting and mentoring this talented group.

Our first two days at Fieldays 🚜have been packed with visitors and great conversations. Today, our Ag extension girls are on a mission, talking to industry leaders, exploring career pathways, and taking in the latest innovations.

If you're heading along over the next two days, pop in and see us in the Rural Living Marquee Site #30. We love to catch up with our wider community, and we have information to share about Iona Boarding enrolments for 2027 and beyond.

Our Spirit day this term was raising donations for the Hawke's Bay charity drive 'Jammies for June'. Students and staff donned their comfiest sleep wear and brought in a pair of winter jammies for those who often go without at this time of year. The students collected over 170 pairs of pyjamas and to top it off, the Year 13s hosted a Jump Jam session in the gym at lunchtime where the whole school really put the joy into Love, Joy, Peace! πŸ’™πŸ’ƒ
