We would like to acknowledge the passing of Sam Neil. A man who had a massive impact on so many people, in so many countries, through so many avenues. Our condoleances to family and close friends. We were very touched by this interview where Sam speaks about the importance of research into cancer for all of us and for improved future treatment and care. Thank you Sam Neil for all the memories and all the wisdom that you shared with us all. May you rest in peace.

This national volunteer week we celebrate and acknowledge all the volunteers who support our breast cancer research cause. We have an amazing team of volunteers who make our Op Shop for Breast Cancer happen!

We were thrilled that our Op Shop Donations area volunteer coordinator John Cubitt was recognised with the “Unsung Hero Award” at the Volunteering Waikato Awards evening last night.

Congratulations! Well deserved and we are so proud of you John!

A massive thank you to Harcourts Hamilton who held a fundraising Pink Breakfast back in May and raised $11,429 for our Waikato based Breast Cancer Research Trust. These funds help enable us to continue research that takes us to a future where there is no more suffering from breast cancer.

We are thrilled that you were able to add a touch of pink to your blue! Harcourts Hamilton team, you are all greatly appreciated!

We have been fortunate to be a site for the international OPTIMA trial at Waikato Hospital. Clinical trials research leads to progress!

💗 Great news for people diagnosed with early breast cancer!

Results from the OPTIMA clinical trial were presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago yesterday.

The study found that many patients aged 40 and over with a low Prosigna genetic test score can safely avoid chemotherapy without increasing their risk of the cancer returning.

This means thousands of people each year may be able to avoid the physical and emotional side effects of chemotherapy while still receiving effective treatment.

Congratulations to Study Chair, Associate Professor Belinda Kiely, and to everyone involved in this important research.

Kia Ora koutou! I’m Hina, and I’m a research nurse with the Breast Cancer Research Trust.

I joined the Trust in early 2023, and I’ve loved being part of a team that works with our Waikato community to improve breast cancer outcomes.

My role is all about supporting people who take part in our clinical trials. I always make sure they feel informed, supported, and comfortable at every step, and that their values, voices, and whānau are respected and included throughout their journey. Being able to walk alongside participants during such an important time is a real privilege and a big part of why I love this mahi.

If you ever want to see me in action, be sure to check out the BBQ stall at our Pink Walk & Run!

Outside of mahi, I enjoy staying active as a way to reset and recharge, and I love to try new things, like new foods, new tv shows, or new hobbies. I’ve recently started scrapbooking and watching Bridgerton. No spoilers please 😄

Professor Ian Campbell and Research Nurse Jenni Scarlet, founders of the Breast Cancer Research Trust, have enabled multiple clinical trials which have improved breast cancer care for Waikato women for over 25 years. The Trust has brought world‑class treatments and hope to many families.

In recognition of their exceptional contribution to health and wellbeing, they were jointly honoured with a 2025 Hamilton Civic Award, with Jenni receiving an additional award for her deeply personal advocacy.

Congratulations!
