A big thank you to West Coast Community Trust for providing the funding that has allowed the Rūnanga Community Trust to start putting together a Community Emergency Cache.

The cache will hold essential supplies that can be used to support our community in the event of a major emergency — including first aid equipment, water, long-shelf-life food, cleaning and sanitising supplies, and other items that may be needed when normal services and access are disrupted.

The emergency cache is one part of the wider Rūnanga Resilience Project being developed by the Rūnanga Community Trust, which includes :

• First Aid training for members of the community
• Distribution of First Aid kits to households throughout the area
• A Community Led Centre workshop to help prepare for establishing a welfare centre during an emergency
• Solar panels and battery storage to provide emergency power
• Development of off-grid local emergency communications

The emergency cache is a good start, but there is still a lot more to add. Building a useful community cache takes time, and we will continue working towards having the supplies and equipment needed to support our communities when they are most needed.

A big thank you again to West Coast Community Trust for helping make this first step possible.

This isn't about expecting an emergency. It's about being ready if one happens. The more prepared we are as a community, the better placed we are to look after each other.

Just an update on the First Aid Kits for the community…

We’ve distributed 550 first aid kits so far, and we’re still not quite finished!

We’re waiting for another batch of kits to arrive so we can cover the remaining areas — part of Seven Mile Road, the area around Balance, Fraser and South Streets, and Coal Creek.

The next batch is expected to arrive next week, which will allow us to distribute kits to the remaining 100 or so households.

We’re nearly there!

Still some places left for this workshop next weekend

Could you help your community in an emergency?
When a major emergency happens, the people who are already there can make a real difference.
A Community Led Centre is a place where local people can come together, share information, support their neighbours and help those affected — including vulnerable residents and visitors.
You can learn how to be part of that response.
Join us for a free one-day Community Led Centre Workshop at Runanga School.
You’ll learn:
*What a Community Led Centre does during an emergency
*How local communities can work alongside Civil Defence
*How to organise and set up a community centre
*How to support people in your community during an emergency
*Practical skills through a hands-on centre setup exercise
*How to work with other local people who may be helping during an emergency
You don't need to be an emergency expert or an experienced volunteer. You just need to be willing to help.

Big thanks to Jess and Sarah and the Tasman crew from Runanga School for getting us started with the community drop-off of the first aid kits! ❤️
And a huge thank you to the Air Rescue Trust for sponsoring these kits and helping us make this initiative possible.

It’s fantastic to see our community coming together. All part of getting ready for when it matters most. Every little bit helps.

Great to be working with Runanga School to help distribute first aid kits to every household in our community. 🩹
The kits are being provided through the Runanga Community Trust’s community resilience programme, with support from the Air Rescue Trust.

A big thanks to the students and staff at Runanga School for helping get these kits out into the community. It’s a great example of Runanga working together and looking after each other.

The first aid kits are just one part of a wider programme of resilience projects being developed in Runanga, including our community emergency cache, solar power for the school as the community welfare centre, satellite internet, first aid courses and investigations into an off-grid communications network.

Being prepared starts at home — and every household can play a part.

On Monday and Friday our staff and senior students will be out in the community building connections 💙 Runanga Community Trust
