The rock master has been at work again. In many ways, rock is the ideal track building material: it is very locally sourced, it's strong, and it lasts forever, with no carbon footprint!

Thanks Ricky and Corina. Great work on Great Expectations!

A hugely successful week at Project Rameka, looking after the tracks and trees.
The weather was perfect and we managed to have three track work parties, and released hundreds of trees from faster growing invasive weeds.
The captions tell the story of who was there, what they did, and a few local species are at the end.

Project Rameka Inc work parties. All Welcome!
WHEN: Sunday 26 April and Monday 27 April.
Starting 10 am both days.
WHERE: On Sunday, we will meet at the Mill Site carpark, Rameka Creek Road, 8 km from Takaka.
On Monday, we will meet at the top Rameka entrance, Rameka Creek Road, 10 km from Takaka.
WHAT: sturdy boots and old clothes, and gloves.
FOOD: We will bring snacks and drinks for everyone.
Mission 1 (Sunday): working on the Rameka Creek Bridge and a short section of track about 100 metres up from the bridge. The bridge is in danger of getting washed out! The work will involve cementing rocks in place around (and under) the bridge abutment.
There will be easier track work on Great Expectations as well, to fix up one of the small ford crossings.
Mission 2 (Monday): working on the historic Rameka Track, from top to bottom, looking for dead/overhanging pine trees beside the track that need to be felled, and widening out a few of the tight switchbacks which are 3km down from the top entrance.
Also, the Rameka AGM is on Wednesday at 7:30pm at the Takaka Primary School on Wadsworth Street in Takaka. Chris Bennett will be giving a presentation on his Around the World Cycle Trip.
Hope to see you there 🙂
P.S. There will also be a 3rd Mission later in the week, to release the native seedlings planted in the previous two years. That will happen on Thursday and/or Friday. Message us if you are keen and we will give you more details. The more help the more fun.
