🚜🐦 Spring has sprung, and the birds are house hunting!

A recent incident is a timely reminder that nesting birds pose a real fire risk in tractors and farm machinery. Your nice warm engine bay can look like the perfect home, but dry nesting material near hot engine parts can quickly spell trouble.

Even if you’ve only parked up for an hour—or ducked away for a cuppa—check before restarting. Birds work fast!

Before you turn the key:

✅ With the engine off, check under the bonnet and around the exhaust for nesting material.
✅ Safely clear any grass, twigs and debris before operating, taking care around hot parts.
✅ Keep a suitable, serviced fire extinguisher on board.

A quick check could save your machinery and help prevent a fire spreading across the farm.

Please share this reminder with your farming neighbours. Stay safe out there!

We’re proud to share this Malvern News story about two of our own, father and son Steve and Jack Daw. Steve is part of our Rural team, while Jack serves with our Structural brigade members.

The pair have been recognised for their bravery after rescuing a driver from a burning, overturned car in Australia in 2024. Their actions made an extraordinary difference, and we’re delighted to see them honoured. Congratulations, Steve and Jack! 👏

We’re sharing the post from Darfield ITM, where Jack works. Thank you to ITM and to all the employers who support our volunteer firefighters.

That support helps our members give their time to the brigade and be there for our community.

This week's Malvern News, our very own young Jack and his Dad. 😊🏅
Darfield ITM is the proud employer of 3 Volunteer fire fighters in our community. Sometimes we can't let them all go at the same time....but we try!

Congratulations to Station Officer Philip Hunt placing 14th in the UFBA National Drivers Competition. Held over 2 days, last weekend, and made up of 3 broad categories, theory, precision driving and the speed events.

The speed events included cornering at speed, sudden lane changes, and weaving. The theory test is based on the road code and the truck driver's road code, along with FENZ policy. Precision driving tests saw the competitors parallel parking, reversing, and estimating clearances.

Congratulations to all the other competitors.

Firefighters can be a bit superstitious at times including using the "q" word. Let's just say we have had consistently low numbers of calls over the last few months.

It has been a winter of unusual weather, keep an eye out for ice in shaded areas, and enjoy the warm days when we get them.

We would like to take a moment to thank the employers of volunteer firefighters here at the Darfield Fire Station.

We are a 100% volunteer station and whenever the siren sounds these businesses allow staff to answer the call.

Thank you.
