At our March business meeting the members agreed to donate $1,000 to the Lions Clubs Cancer Trust. They are doing great work as they travel around the country. For anything of concern that is noted, the person is encouraged to get further checks done via their doctor and specialists and in some cases it has led to surgery. We hope to have a bus at our book sale later this year.

New Lynn Lions were asked to help a local lady who only had months to live. Her front door was awkward as she had to step down and walk a couple of steps and then step up again. It was very difficult for someone using a walker. Our Secretary Steve made a visit, saw what needed to be done and got a quick okay from the members and within a very short time some ply was bought. Between Steve and Noel the job was quickly completed.

We immediately received an email from the ex-Lion who had asked us for help initially, thanking us for helping the "very giving lady" in her hour of need. Both she and the lady we helped were very grateful. She was now able to use her walker in this area making life much easier for her.

It is time to let you know of a sizeable donation New Lynn Lions made to West Auckland Hospice late last year. It was $5,000 towards their refurbished kitchen. After some years without any accommodation at their Te Atatu site they now have three hospice beds and an additional respite bed on site. To enable this to happen it was essential to have a refurbished kitchen including a whanau area. We were happy to donate to such a great cause. New Lynn Lions Past President Lianne Sloan attended the official opening to show sponsors and supporters the new bedrooms and kitchen. Also present was Huapai-Kumeu Lions PDG Jack Hayes and wife Sandy. Their club also donated $5,000, another great donation from Lions.

The rooms are in use now and are proving to be a very necessary addition to West Auckland Hospice services. Having the rooms available to those who need them does mean a large increase to their annual costs so if you are able to donate they would love to hear from you or you can make a donation on their website. https://www.hwa.org.nz/

Over the last six years we have donated $10,000 of groceries to Kai Avondale. We also helped deliver some food parcels during lockdown just before Christmas. One of our members and his work team worked for a day at Kai Avondale over several years and a member has also attended a couple of their community dinners. We also donated other items including some books. This is a small organisation however Anne Riley and her team provide a much needed service in their community. We were delighted to hear that she was named a Tower Local Hero medalist as part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year awards.
