For Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō, those conversations began in 2022.

From the start, they knew tamariki impacted by parental incarceration deserved to be seen, heard, and supported.

This was the beginning of a journey that continues today.

Because rangatahi spoke, change is happening.

In 2022, the first rōpū of Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō came together.

Driven by a belief in the lived experience and expertise of rangatahi, the goal was simple: to learn from young people and strengthen the support available for children and whānau impacted by parental incarceration.

From the very beginning, they carried a vision for change.

A vision that future tamariki impacted by whānau incarceration would be seen, heard, and supported.

Because rangatahi spoke, change is happening.

Lots of laugh and curious conversations as different scents were passed around at our latest Kidult programme.

With Living Well with Tracey Coulthard, tamariki explored different emotions through scents. Creating their own special perfume was the perfect anchor to build friendships and experience something new together!

Last week, supporters, sponsors, students, and community champions came together for the Law For Change UC Charity Auction Gala.

Together, they helped create something much bigger than a fundraising event. They helped strengthen the community surrounding tamariki and whānau, ensuring more families have the support and opportunity to choose better futures.

Too often, tamariki with a parent in prison can like they are unheard. Yet time and time again, you chose to listen.

From the youth-led conference in South Auckland, to the steps of Parliament, to conversations on a jet boat in the Waitematā Harbour, you didn't just amplify their voices, you carried them into rooms, conversations, and decision-making spaces across Aotearoa.

Thank you for helping create a future where tamariki and rangatahi know they matter, where their voices influence the decisions that affect them, and where more people across Aotearoa are part of the change needed so all mokopuna can thrive.
