Pillars New Zealand

Pillars New Zealand Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou, a charity supporting children and families with whānau in prison.

We provide support to tamariki and their whānau through two core programmes:
- Community based (in house) social work support tailored to the needs of each whānau.
- Mentoring for children and youth aged 5-17 years old.

These programmes are currently operating in Auckland and Christchurch. We also have Pathway Centres based in certain prisons offering direct support. And we provide Wrap Around W

hānau social work support for whānau with mental health requirements in Auckland and Hamilton. Pillars Social Workers and Mentoring Coordinators are committed to supporting Pillars tamariki to work towards their goals and stride into the future with confidence. We believe children of people in prison are children of promise and potential.

Creating space for rangatahi voices matters.

We’re incredible grateful to Mana Mokopuna and to Dr Claire Achmad, for hosting “Our Voices Matter” alongside Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō.

Ngā mihi for carrying their voices forward into the places were policy and practice decisions are made.

It leaves us with hope.
Hope that rangatahi are being seen.
Hope that they’re being heard.
And hope that their experiences will shape change for all mokopuna.

During the Youth Week webinar, rangatahi shared a clear message.

They spoke about their right to feel safe, to be supported, included, and see evidence‑led policies in action and to have a positive future.

The rangatahi of Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō have handed us something important: a call to action grounded in their realities, their strength, and their hopes for the future.

Our role now is to honour that.

To walk alongside them and their whānau. And to ensure these rights are not just spoken, but experienced, every day.

Tamariki impacted by parental incarceration have the right to have their long-term wellbeing drive policy decisions.

This kaupapa carries deep history.

In 2024, Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō (Youth Advisory Panel) undertook an ambitious task: revising the "Children of Incarcerated Parents: A Bill of Rights.”

The result is a groundbreaking, youth-led consultation document designed to be referenced anywhere tamariki and the justice system intersect.

Before we talk about turning rights into reality, it’s important to understand where this kaupapa comes from.

🧡 Nau mai, haere mai e Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō 2026!

The first rōpū session was all about reconnecting and welcoming new members.

The rangatahi encouraged one another through nerves and adrenaline, choosing their own pace as they took on obstacles.

At the heart of the day was a reminder we return to often: rangatahi are the experts of their own lived experience. Their voices matter.

This was Day 1 and we're just getting started. 🌱
