The Norman Kirk Memorial Trust has maintained a valued relationship with Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington since 2014. Over this period, the Trust has supported a number of students by helping to ease financial pressures, enabling them to continue their studies with greater confidence and focus.

On 17 March 2026, the Norman Kirk Memorial Trust marked its 50th anniversary. Established to commemorate the life and work of the Right Honourable Norman Kirk, the Trust honours the legacy of a leader whose commitment to fairness, education and opportunity continues to inspire.

Norman Kirk died in Wellington on 31 August 1974 while serving as Prime Minister of New Zealand. In the decades since, the Trust has built enduring partnerships with educational institutions across Aotearoa and the Pacific, creating opportunities for generations of students and leaders.

This commemorative video celebrates the Trust's journey and explores how one man's vision for equity, education and opportunity continues to transform lives across generations.

The Norman Kirk Memorial Trust has been involved with the Pacific Pathology Training Centre-PPTC since 2003. During that time this partnership has enabled a Pacific Island student to travel to Wellington and participate in specialist courses.

The PPTC is truly appreciative of the Trust’s commitment to strengthening medical laboratory capacity across the region.

The PPTC was established in 1980, primarily to provide training and assistance in the Medical Laboratory Sciences. PPTC also provides developmental assistance for clinical laboratories and blood transfusion services for Pacific Island countries and South East Asia.

A documentary about former New Zealand Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern has won the top prize for best documentary at the 2026 News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

Congratulations to Dame Jacinda Ardern and the team who worked on the documentary from the Norman Kirk Memorial Trust

The film, which features home footage shot by husband Clarke Gayford, has won the top prize for best documentary at the 2026 News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

Jacinda Ardern documentary 'Prime Minister' nominated for two Emmy Awards.

Dame Jacinda has mentioned in the past how Norman Kirk was "a hero of mine, and brought such dignity and resolve to the battle against poverty and injustice. He also knew that people need us as politicians to try and get the basics right. After all, people don't want much, just "someone to love, somewhere to work, somewhere to live, and something to hope for."

Prime Minister looks at how Ardern balanced motherhood with leadership, and navigated crises like the Covid-19 lockdowns and the Christchurch terror attack.
