The Meningitis Foundation is currently targeting high-risk ‘halls of residence’ university students with education on Meningitis symptoms and vaccination. Up to 30% of cases occur as students move into close-living situations – so the Freemasons Foundation is supporting the Meningitis Foundation to attend orientation events around the country to raise awareness of the disease and encouraging students to get vaccinated to ensure they are protected. Free MenB and ACW&Y vaccines are available in NZ for 13–25 yr olds.

Name: Frankie Muir
High School: Tauranga Girls’ College, St. Paul’s Collegiate
Degree: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Our Freemasons Foundation Mātai Summer Intern Frankie Muir has just completed her second year of Medicine at the University of Otago. Frankie has strong ties to Gisborne, and her summer intern project will be based around using novel MRI technology to analyse brain motion patterns - supervised by Dr Itamar Terem, Dr Samantha Holdsworth and Jet Wright. Giving back to the community via healthcare has been a driving force for Frankie to pursue a Mātai Internship.

Her research focuses on classifying motion patterns using aMRI techniques and exploring potential relationships with age, clinical diagnosis, and amyloid status. Mātai has given Frankie a unique opportunity to combine clinical research with community outreach, something Frankie aspires to continue in her professional
career.

Jo Morgan, EVolocity - Head of Partnerships, says:
“Freemasons Foundation has funded motor kits yearly for the 2024, 2025 programmes and recently again for 2026. With their support, many schools and teams received these kits, which are essential components for the vehicles they design and build. These kits spark creativity, engineering excellence and sustainable innovation. We’re deeply grateful to the Freemasons Foundation for breaking down financial barriers and powering the dreams of rangatahi across Aotearoa."

With support from the Freemasons Foundation, the Meningitis Foundation Aotearoa NZ is expanding its awareness programme to reach more university and secondary school students in 2026. Meningitis can kill in less than 24 hours - often with symptoms that mirror the flu or a bad hangover. Vaccinations are free for students living in close quarters, such as hostels/halls of residence and boarding schools, and it is vital to act quickly if students are feeling unwell. Scan the QR code for meningitis symptoms.

The Meningitis Foundation Aotearoa New Zealand (MFANZ) is committed to reducing and preventing meningitis across New Zealand - advocating for wider access to vaccines and raising awareness about the disease.

Glaucoma affects more than 130,000 New Zealanders. Without the right support, it can be an isolating and overwhelming journey. Freemasons Foundation is supporting symposiums by Glaucoma NZ designed to change that. Seven free regional events will be delivered over 12 months, each a half-day programme featuring expert ophthalmologists and optometrists, practical demonstrations and patient stories. Attendees receive resource packs, enjoy informal kōrero over morning tea and most importantly, leave with the knowledge and confidence to manage their glaucoma more effectively.

Read more on our website:

In the past two years, over 700 people have attended Glaucoma NZ’s symposiums, with 97% reporting greater confidence in managing their condition afterwards.
