The Umbrella Foundation was a non-profit NGO and registered charity in Ireland and partner countries that worked to alleviate the impact of trafficking, poverty and war in Nepal between 2005-2021. Established in 2005 in response to the growing number of illegal ‘orphanages’ neglecting children’s most basic rights – such as food, education, safe shelter, healthcare and love – Umbrella was a family-

first charity which rescued 400+ vulnerable children and reintegrated most of them back with their families and rural communities. When reintegration was not possible, they were supported in childcare homes until they could stand on their own two feet. As a responsible and ethical organisation, Umbrella worked alongside the Government of Nepal's Child Welfare Board to prevent further trafficking, continuously raising awareness about issues of child marriage, child labour and trafficking in rural areas. In March 2021, The Umbrella Foundation successfully transitioned out of Nepal and closed their office in Ireland after nearly 17 years, handing over operations and responsibility to their local partner Umbrella Organisation Nepal (UON), who has been with them since the beginning.
