🩸🦎 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 🦎🩸

🎃 If there’s one reptile that truly belongs in a Halloween story, it’s the horned lizard (Phrynosoma platyrhinos). This small lizard lives in the deserts of North America. 🌵

It may be tiny, but it’s a master at scaring off predators. When this spiky little creature feels threatened, it does something straight out of a horror movie: it shoots blood from its eyes! 😱🩸

That blood isn’t just a creepy trick, it’s a defense mechanism.

By building up pressure in its head, the lizard can rupture the small blood vessels around its eyes and sq**rt a thin stream of blood up to a meter away. This startles predators such as coyotes and the blood also tastes terrible. 🐺

So while people might use fake blood for their Halloween costumes, the horned lizard has no problem using the real thing. 🩸🎃

Today, we are attending the children's event at Griezelig Geldrop Mierlo! 👻 And we will be back again on 7th of November.

Are snakes, spiders and other animals we sometimes find scary really that frightening? 🐍🕷️

💚 We believe that understanding is the first step towards respect. By helping children learn more about these animals, we hope to replace fear with curiosity and appreciation for wildlife.

🎃 Will we see you today or on 7 November at Griezelig Geldrop Mierlo?

Today, we celebrate Reptile Awareness Day! 🦎🐢

Reptiles may be cold blooded, but they deserve a whole lot of warmth, care and understanding. From tiny geckos and colourful chameleons to mighty crocodiles and fascinating snakes, reptiles come in an incredible variety of shapes, sizes and behaviours.

Sadly, many reptile species face serious threats, including habitat loss, pollution, climate change and illegal wildlife trade. They play important roles in healthy ecosystems, and protecting them means protecting the natural world we all depend on. 🌿

At the Herpetofauna Foundation, we support conservation projects that help protect endangered species and their habitats. But we cannot do it alone!

💚 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐀 𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄?

🙌 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐀 𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐄𝐑 and help us make a difference through your time, skills and enthusiasm.

🌿 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐀 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐎𝐑 and support our conservation projects to protect reptiles, amphibians and their habitats.

Every helping hand counts. Together, we can give these incredible animals a better future!

🐍🌍 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🌍🐢

Every year on October 21st, we celebrate Reptile Awareness Day. This day is dedicated to reptiles and aims to help people learn more about this remarkable group of animals. From snakes and lizards to turtles and crocodiles, reptiles are fascinating creatures that play a vital role in nature. Yet, they are often misunderstood or feared by many. 🐍🦎🐊

🌿 Through the Herpetofauna Foundation, we support various projects that assist endangered species. We also participate in a range of events, expos, and other venues, providing opportunities for people to encounter these extraordinary animals firsthand. 💚

📅 While we don’t hold a specific event on October 21st, because, for us, every day is Reptile Awareness Day, we do hope that this date brings a little extra attention to reptiles worldwide. These animals play a crucial role in the ecosystem, and the venom of certain species is even used to develop medicines that directly benefit humans. 🔬❤️

🌎 Reptile Awareness Day is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the unique world of reptiles. By learning more about them, challenging common prejudices, and protecting their natural habitats, we can help ensure their survival. Reptiles deserve our attention, our respect, and our protection, not just on October 21st, but all year round! 🐍💚
