Men and boys have an important role to play in challenging harmful norms and contributing to an society.

With this in mind, Equity Watch Initiative recently organised an International Day of the Girl Child pre-event program titled “Her Future, Our Mission: Engaging Men and Boys to Promote Gender Equality” for students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, ahead of the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child.

The program sparked thoughtful reflections, questions and discussions among participants, creating opportunity for the g people to examine how everyday beliefs and expectations can shape our , and .

The conversation reminded us that creating a more equitable society is not the responsibility of women and girls alone. Men and boys are in challenging norms and building a culture rooted in , , and .

Yesterday, the 21st of September, the world marked the International Day of Peace under the 2026 theme “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”

While peace is often discussed in the context of conflict zones and high-level negotiations, we chose to mark it internally. During a strategic session with our staff and volunteers as we reflected on our vision, mission, and objectives. The session provided a deeper insight that reaffirms that peace starts from within and sustains efficiency. When people feel heard, respected, and safe, everyone works better.

As we reflects on our values, vision, mission, and objectives, we reaffirmed our commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls, and to continuing to invest in peace every day, and everywhere.

Together, we shall build a community where equality, dignity, safety and inclusion are not just ideal, but a reality.

Never assume you know what a community needs before you listen. Always ask, listen, understand, and then act.

A programme may look perfect on paper, the objectives may be clear, the activities may be well planned and even be impressive. But communities live the reality, not the proposal.

This is why listening must come before intervention. Because the best solutions are not always the ones we bring into communities.
Sometimes, they are the ones communities have been waiting for someone to hear.

Together, we are taking advocacy directly to the . Leveraging the powerful platform of the 2026 Women August Meeting, we embarked on a outreach program in Enugu North Senatorial Zone focusin on

The annual brings together thousands of women from rural and urban communities to address developmental issues , and social justice. By embedding critical GBV awareness into these gatherings, we are empowering women with legal literacy, teaching prevention strategies, and strengthening local reporting structures to protect women and girls.

Equity Watch Initiative in partnership with the Breaking The Silence: WACOL/Tamar SARC recently embarked on targeted advocacy visits across Enugu North Senatorial Zone for Gender-Based Violence ( ) prevention and institutional .

During this round of , we held strategic dialogues with key custodians of and faith, with the recognition that community-led protection, equity and inclusion starts at the grassroots. Our engagement with H.R.H. Igwe Ikebuokwu Ekweme of Amutenyi, Obollo Afor & his cabinet members, and the executives of Catholic Women organization St Joseph Parish Amutenyi was .

Promoting human , dismantling practices, and community level justice mechanisms for and is at the root of community development. Mobilizing faith-based women who stand on the frontline of community awareness, support networks, and social reform remains paramount.

By uniting traditional institutions and religious organizations, we are building a more equal world, safer and more accountable environment where survivors are supported and violence is never tolerated.
