Protecting Older Persons in the Digital Age

As technology continues to connect us, it also presents new risks. Older persons are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated online scams that can lead to financial loss, emotional distress, and a loss of trust.

At Common Ground for Peace, Rights and Development (CGPRD), we believe that digital safety is an essential part of protecting the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of every member of our communities.

We are pleased to support the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in raising awareness about online fraud targeting older persons. We encourage everyone to watch this important video, share it with family members, caregivers, community groups, and older adults, and help spread practical tips for staying safe online.

The leadership of the Common Ground for Peace, Rights and Development (CGPRD) recently conducted strategic courtesy visits to the Yobe State offices of CARE International and Save the Children International. These engagements were aimed at cementing existing relations, exploring avenues for mutual partnership, and developing practical modalities for future collaboration.

The discussions centered on how CGPRD’s grassroots presence and community-led approaches can complement the impactful work of both international organizations within Yobe State. By leveraging local trust and insights, the visits laid the groundwork for coordinated efforts designed to address critical community needs more effectively.

Speaking during the visits, CGPRD’s Executive Director, Bukar Mohammed Atiyaye, emphasized the power of localized action. He noted that sustainable development and humanitarian efforts are most successful when international expertise is paired with the deep community trust, access, and relationships that local organizations bring to the table.

In their respective responses, the leadership teams of both CARE International and Save the Children International welcomed the CGPRD delegation, expressing their openness to exploring collaborative frameworks. They highlighted the vital role that credible local partners play in driving community-driven development and achieving lasting positive impacts in the state.

These engagements reinforce the belief that building resilient communities requires strong, coordinated action between international actors and local institutions.

Office of the National Security Adviser: CGPRD Explores Strategic Partnership with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), through the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), North East Zonal Centre, recently received the leadership of the Common Ground for Peace, Rights and Development (CGPRD) for a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening community-led approaches to preventing the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons across Northeast Nigeria.

The meeting focused on how CGPRD's deep-rooted presence within local communities can complement the Centre's constitutional mandate, contributing to more effective prevention efforts while strengthening the broader peacebuilding and security ecosystem across the geopolitical zone.

Speaking during the engagement, CGPRD's Executive Director, Bukar Mohammed Atiyaye, emphasized that sustainable efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons must begin with communities. He noted that the organization's community-rooted approach, trusted relationships with grassroots stakeholders, and extensive experience in community engagement position CGPRD to support the Centre's work through public awareness, community dialogue, evidence generation, early identification of emerging risks, and stronger collaboration between communities and relevant institutions.

In his remarks, the Zonal Director of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, North East Zonal Centre, Major General A. Adamu (Rtd.), welcomed the delegation and commended CGPRD for its commitment to community-based peacebuilding and development. He acknowledged the indispensable role that grassroots organizations play in addressing security challenges and expressed the Centre's willingness to work closely with CGPRD in advancing shared objectives of promoting peace, strengthening community resilience, and preventing the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons throughout the Northeast.

The engagement reaffirmed a shared understanding that lasting peace and security cannot be achieved through institutional action alone. Strong partnerships between government institutions and trusted community actors are essential to addressing the root causes of insecurity, building public trust, and fostering resilient communities capable of preventing violence before it occurs.

At CGPRD, we remain committed to working with communities and institutions alike to advance sustainable peace, strengthen human security, and support coordinated efforts toward a safer and more peaceful Northeast Nigeria.

When women speak, communities listen.

In Kukar Gadu, we sat with women to discuss governance, accountability, and their role in shaping the future of their communities. Their voices reflected resilience, wisdom, and a clear desire for leaders who prioritize people over politics.

One participant reminded us:

"We may not hold public office, but the decisions made by leaders affect our homes, our children, and our future every day."

Through the Democracy Beyond Elections Project, we continue to create spaces where citizens—especially women—can engage, speak up, and contribute to building a more accountable and inclusive society.

Democracy does not end at the ballot box; it thrives when citizens actively participate.

Women’s Voices Matter: DBE Engagement in Kukar Gadu

Following our community engagements in Maiturare, Tokarai, Kusulwa, and Jumu’ah Village, the Democracy Beyond Elections (DBE) Project continued its outreach on Tuesday with a dedicated engagement for women in Kukar Gadu, Yobe State.

Recognizing the critical role women play as voters, mothers, community mobilizers, peacebuilders, and agents of accountability, the session provided a platform for women to discuss their experiences, expectations of leadership, and their role in strengthening democratic governance.

The discussion focused on civic awareness, voter participation, accountability, and the proposed Community-Candidate Commitment Agreement, which seeks to establish a clear understanding between communities and those seeking public office.

What stood out most was the depth of the conversation and the willingness of the women to speak openly about the kind of leadership and governance they want to see in their communities.

One participant observed:

"I don't usually know the candidates or even their political parties. We just go to the polling unit and meet people we know. They give us spaghetti, soap, or detergent and tell us who to vote for. But if what you are saying is true, that the people we elect can provide water, schools for our children, including our girls, hospitals, and other services, then we will follow you. Please tell us what we should do."

Another participant remarked:

"Women may not always be the ones standing for election, but we are among those most affected by the decisions leaders make. That is why our voices must be heard before, during, and after elections."

Throughout the engagement, participants emphasized the need for leaders who are accessible, accountable, and committed to delivering on their promises. They also highlighted the importance of ensuring that women are not merely beneficiaries of governance but active contributors to democratic processes.

The DBE Project continues to demonstrate that democracy is strongest when every segment of society has a voice. By creating spaces for meaningful dialogue, we are helping communities move beyond voting alone and towards sustained citizen engagement and accountability.

Because democracy is not only about choosing leaders—it is also about ensuring that leaders remain accountable to the people they serve.

Democracy Beyond Elections (DBE): Taking Accountability to the Communities

This weekend, the Common Ground for Peace, Rights and Development (CGPRD) continued the implementation of the Democracy Beyond Elections (DBE) Project, deepening our engagement with communities in Yobe State.

We first convened community members from Maiturare, Tokarai, and Kusulwa villages, who gathered in Maiturare for a collective dialogue on democratic participation, accountability, and citizen engagement. Thereafter, our team proceeded to Jumu’ah Village, where we held a similar engagement with community members.

The Democracy Beyond Elections (DBE) Project is founded on the belief that democracy should not begin and end at the ballot box. Through the project, we are working to:

✅ Strengthen civic awareness and democratic literacy
✅ Promote informed and responsible voter participation
✅ Encourage voter registration and PVC collection
✅ Foster active citizen engagement beyond election periods
✅ Strengthen accountability between elected leaders and the communities they serve

During these engagements, we made an important advancement in the project by facilitating discussions on the qualities and criteria communities expect from those seeking public office. Participants reflected on the values, competencies, and commitments that should guide leadership selection beyond political affiliations and campaign promises.

Most significantly, we introduced discussions on a proposed Community-Candidate Commitment Agreement—a social accountability mechanism through which communities and aspiring leaders can jointly agree on priority commitments and expectations before elections.

The response from community members was overwhelmingly positive.

One participant remarked:

“This is one of the most important accountability initiatives I have ever seen. For the first time, communities will have a clear basis for engaging leaders on what they promised before elections.”

Another participant noted:
“Many candidates make promises during campaigns and disappear after elections. This agreement can help create a sense of responsibility and remind both leaders and citizens of their commitments.”

These reflections reinforce what we have consistently observed throughout the DBE Project: citizens are eager to participate in democracy when they are given meaningful opportunities to shape it.

As we continue this journey, we remain committed to building a culture where citizens are not only voters but active stakeholders in governance, accountability, and development.

Because democracy is not just about elections—it is about the continuous relationship between citizens and those elected to serve them.
