CARD Innovation: Turning Waste into Clean Fuel

For a long time, communities across rural Nigeria have depended on firewood and charcoal to cook their meals, It is familiar, It is affordable. But it comes at a cost that our planet can no longer afford.

Producing traditional charcoal means cutting trees and burning it which means thick, toxic smoke filling homes and lungs especially affecting women and children who spend the most time cooking.

CARD asked a simple but powerful question: What if we could make the same fuel without cutting a single tree?

The answer came from the waste already around us, agricultural residues, organic scraps this are materials that communities once considered useless.

CARD has developed a process to compact this waste into briquettes fuel blocks that burn just as well as traditional charcoal, which produce significantly less smoke and require zero deforestation to manufacture.

This is not just an environmental win, It is a health win, an economic win and a community win.

At CARD, we believe that climate solutions don’t always come from laboratories or global summits. Sometimes, they come from looking at what your community already has and imagining what it could become.

This is our commitment: it is practical, local and an impactful climate action.

From Small Savings to Big Dreams: Women Transforming Their Futures Through VSLA

What happens when women come together with a shared commitment to save, support one another, and build a better future?

In Takwashinge community in Dass LAG, two Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) groups have demonstrated the power of collective action and financial discipline by successfully completing their savings cycle and conducting their share out exercise.

Through regular savings, responsible loan management, and strong group commitment, members collectively shared out an impressive ₦4,167,655. One group shared ₦1,817,500, while the second shared ₦2,350,155 among its members.

For many of these women, this is more than just money it is an opportunity. Members plan to invest in farming activities, expand small businesses, support their families, pay school expenses, and meet critical household needs.

The excitement and pride witnessed during the share out exercise reflected the life changing impact of financial inclusion at the community level. What began as small, regular contributions has grown into a pathway for economic empowerment, resilience, and hope.

At CARD, we believe that when women have access to financial opportunities, entire communities benefit. This success story is a testament to the transformative power of the VSLA approach in creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening rural economies.

Building Partnerships for Inclusive Landscape Management in Jamaare, Bauchi State 🌱

Over the past five days, Community Advocate for Rural Development (CARD), in collaboration with the Soil Values Project, successfully facilitated a multi-stakeholder partnership workshop focused on advancing Inclusive Landscape Management in Jamaare its surrounding communities.

The workshop brought together government representatives, community leaders, women and youth groups, farmers, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders to jointly analyze challenges and opportunities within the landscape.
Through participatory tools and discussions, participants:

✅ Conducted stakeholder analysis and mapping using the ARE-IN Tool and Power-Interest Matrix. ✅ Carried out territorial diagnosis and problem analysis. ✅ Developed a shared vision for sustainable landscape management.
✅ Applied the DPSIR framework to better understand environmental and socio-economic drivers, pressures, states, impacts, and responses.
✅ Co-created a Theory of Change outlining pathways for achieving long-term landscape restoration and sustainable development.
✅ Identified intermediate outcomes, key activities, and visible markers of change to guide collective action.

The workshop strengthened collaboration among stakeholders and laid a strong foundation for coordinated efforts toward resilient ecosystems, improved livelihoods, and sustainable natural resource management.

We appreciate all participants for their active engagement, valuable contributions, and commitment to building a healthier and more productive landscape for present and future generations.

World Environment Day 2026: Taking Action for a Greener Future

As part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026, CARD, in collaboration with UNICEF, SUBEB, U-Reporters, YOMA, and YDAP, carried out a large scale tree planting exercise across Bauchi State to promote environmental conservation and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts.

The initiative was implemented in 7 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and reached 200 secondary schools, where over 300 trees were planted. This effort not only enhances the environment but also helps raise awareness among young people about the importance of protecting our planet for future generations.

Every tree planted today is an investment in a healthier, greener, and more sustainable tomorrow.
