Recognition is especially meaningful when it comes from the partners and institutions we work alongside.

HSDF was honoured to receive an award from the Kano State Ministry of Health in recognition of our contributions to advancing non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention, care, and health systems strengthening in the state.

Working closely with the Ministry through the Diabetes Awareness and Care Project, HSDF has supported efforts to strengthen NCD prevention, screening, referral, and management, while also contributing to the establishment of the Kano State NCD Technical Working Group, an important platform for coordination, alignment, and sustainability.

This recognition reflects the power of partnership, shared commitment, and collective action in improving health outcomes.

Effective health budgeting requires decisions that are grounded in evidence, aligned with sector priorities, and focused on results.

HSDF analyses Annual Operational Plans (AOPs), Budget Implementation Reports (BIRs), and annual health budgets to generate evidence on allocation priorities, performance trends, and budget implementation within the Kaduna State health sector.

These insights support budget and planning officers to make more informed decisions and adopt results-based budgeting approaches, helping to strengthen planning, improve resource allocation, and contribute to better health service delivery outcomes.

Inclusive health systems require evidence that reflects the needs and realities of all populations.

At the Validation Workshop on the Baseline Assessment and Gender, Youth and Social Inclusion (GYSI) Analysis, HSDF highlighted its approach to integrating gender-responsive and inclusive considerations into state governance, financing, and service delivery support.

Through strengthened MDA documentation standards, HSDF supports the generation of data-driven evidence to optimize programme impact for donors and vulnerable populations.

HSDF also collaborates with partners to advance Kaduna State's health systems by building inclusive monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) frameworks and creating budget safeguards that protect financing allocations and strengthen governance to sustain donor investment impact.

The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, alongside the FCDP consortium, recently convened over 20 MDAs, development partners, academia, and civil society to draft the National Multisectoral Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition (NMPFAN) 2026–2030.

As a consortium member, HSDF provided technical facilitation and shared findings from an assessment of the 2020–2025 plan, which surveyed over 150 stakeholders. The assessment revealed critical implementation, financing, and accountability gaps, and lessons are being used to shape the development of the next iteration of the plan.

Collaborating across health, agriculture, education, and other sectors, participants developed draft sectoral Strategy Primers and an M&E Framework aligned with national policy. This workshop establishes a strong foundation for a coordinated, evidence-driven nutrition agenda and HSDF remains committed to strengthening governance and accelerating progress toward improved nutrition outcomes for all Nigerians.

To strengthen transparency, accountability, and performance in primary healthcare financing, HSDF conducted analyses on transparency mechanisms, citizen engagement systems, and PHC budget ex*****on processes in Kaduna State.

The findings were presented and validated during a stakeholder workshop that brought together government representatives and key partners to review evidence, identify implementation challenges, and agree on priority reforms.

The analyses revealed opportunities to improve fund flow visibility, reporting consistency, data accessibility, citizen feedback mechanisms, and budget ex*****on processes. Stakeholders also identified practical actions, including digitization of fiscal data, stronger transparency measures, improved citizen engagement systems, and enhanced collaboration with Ward Development Committees (WDCs) and local government leadership.

By generating actionable evidence and supporting stakeholder-driven solutions, HSDF continues to strengthen accountability, improve financial visibility, and support more effective primary healthcare financing in Kaduna State.

Every day, somewhere, someone is waiting for blood.

Access to safe blood remains essential to effective healthcare delivery. Yet blood shortages continue to affect the ability of health facilities to respond to emergencies, surgeries, childbirth complications, and other critical medical needs.

As we commemorate World Blood Donor Day, we are reminded that a sustainable blood supply depends on regular voluntary blood donors.

Building a reliable blood supply requires voluntary blood donation to become a routine act of community responsibility and solidarity. Every unit of blood donated represents hope for a patient and a second chance at life for someone in need.

Today, we celebrate the individuals who consistently step forward to donate blood and encourage more people to join this life-saving movement.

As we conclude this myth-busting series, we address one of the most common reasons people hesitate to donate blood: The assumption that it takes too much time.

In practice, blood donation is a structured and efficient process designed with donor comfort and safety in mind. It includes a brief health screening, the donation itself, and a short recovery period with rest and refreshments. The actual blood collection takes only a few minutes.

When people hear “blood donation,” they often imagine a long and demanding process. In reality, it is a short visit that fits easily into a normal day.

When viewed in context, the time commitment is minimal compared to the potential impact. A single donation can support patients in emergency situations, surgeries, childbirth complications, and other critical conditions where blood availability is the difference between life and death.

Understanding this helps shift perception from inconvenience to opportunity.

Project Aisha recently convened a high-level stakeholder meeting, bringing together Permanent Secretaries from Lagos State Health Districts II, III, IV, and V; Directors from the Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMOH), Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board (LSPHCB), and Lagos State Health Districts, frontline healthcare workers, community members, and implementing partners.
The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the project's achievements, celebrate its impact on maternal healthcare delivery, and identify pathways for sustaining and scaling successful interventions across the state's health system.

Participants explored Project Aisha's integrated approach, which combines community empowerment, frontline worker-led quality improvement, innovative digital solutions, and strengthened health system accountability. Powerful testimonies from community members, healthcare workers, and health leaders highlighted the transformative impact of these interventions on maternal health outcomes.

A standout moment was the "Show and Tell" session, where frontline healthcare workers showcased innovative solutions and results achieved through maternal health-focused initiatives in their facilities. Through a technical working session, stakeholders also developed strategic actions to support the scale-up, spread, and long-term sustainability of these interventions.

As Lagos State continues to strengthen maternal healthcare services, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to integrating the project's proven approaches into ongoing efforts to improve maternal health outcomes and ensure safer pregnancy and childbirth experiences for women across the state.
