🇪🇺🤝🇻🇦 PGEU (of which Kamra Spiżjara is a Member) had the honour of meeting Pope Leo XIV to highlight the essential role of community pharmacists in supporting patients, protecting public health and ensuring that no one is left behind. Pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals, providing trusted advice, personalised support and a listening ear to patients every day. In an increasingly digital world, including one shaped by Artificial Intelligence, technology must serve people and strengthen, not replace, the human relationship at the heart of care. Innovation offers exciting opportunities to improve healthcare, but its value ultimately lies in how it benefits patients. As emphasized in Magnifica Humanitas, the encyclical of Pope Leo XIV, human dignity, compassion and solidarity must remain at the heart of scientific and technological progress, ensuring that innovation always serves humanity and the common good. From the COVID-19 pandemic to other public health emergencies, community pharmacies have demonstrated their resilience and their vital role in maintaining continuity of care, providing reliable information and ensuring access to essential medicines when patients need them most. The PGEU delegation also visited the Vatican Pharmacy to exchange views on pharmaceutical compounding and the importance of ensuring access to medicines. These discussions highlighted the value of pharmaceutical expertise, tailored solutions for patients and the continued commitment of pharmacists to meeting healthcare needs. This meeting was a meaningful opportunity to reaffirm a shared vision of healthcare grounded in human dignity, compassion, solidarity and equitable access to medicines. Because behind every prescription, every medicine and every technological innovation, there is a person who deserves care, trust and attention.

*STATEMENT*

Recent public discussion has highlighted the close proximity that can exist in Malta between political decision-makers, regulators, professionals and major economic operators.

The Malta Federation of Professional Associations (MFPA) does not seek to prejudge the conduct of any individual or enter into partisan political debate. It does, however, believe that the issues raised provide an opportunity to reflect on good governance within the realities of a small jurisdiction such as Malta.

Malta’s size can be one of its greatest strengths. Short lines of communication and accessibility between institutions, professionals and enterprises allow our country to respond quickly, solve problems pragmatically and punch above its weight. We should not lose this advantage through unnecessary bureaucracy.

However, proximity must be supported by clear safeguards. Access should never become privilege, nor should informal communication create, or appear to create, different standards of treatment.

The MFPA therefore encourages Government, public authorities and regulators to maintain clear, proportionate and transparent protocols governing access, conflicts of interest, material representations and regulatory decision-making, applied equally and consistently to all.

Good governance should not make a small country less agile. It should provide the clarity and confidence that allow accessibility to remain one of its strengths.

This morning, we have lost one of our legendary past lecturers, microbiologist Professor Paul Cuschieri.

Profs Cushieri was a true gentleman with high professional and ethical standards. He lectured many pharmacy students and he was very proud of us.
He left an indelible mark on our profession and on the Maltese healthcare, academic and microbiology lab legacy.

May the Lord grant him eternal rest.

“Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures” is the theme of World Pharmacists Day on 25 September 2026.
As healthcare needs continue to evolve — driven by demographic change, noncommunicable diseases, digital transformation and climate pressures —empowering pharmacists with the skills, recognition and system support they need has never been more important.

Pharmacists’ critical contribution to prevention, access to care, health system resilience and sustainability is highlighted in this year’s theme “Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures”. As global health challenges intensify, FIP, the global leader in advancing pharmacy, calls on governments, policymakers, regulators, health insurers and the public to strengthen supportive policies, invest in education and ensure the full integration within health systems.

“Empowering pharmacists means equipping them with the competencies, recognition and working environments necessary to meet evolving health needs,” said FIP president Mr Paul Sinclair, AM. “Pharmacists are uniquely positioned at the intersection of medicines supply, scientific innovations and patient care delivery. When they are enabled to practise to the full extent of their expertise, health systems are more accessible, more responsive and more sustainable.”
FIP emphasises that empowering the profession is not optional, but essential to building stronger, future-ready systems.

Every day, pharmacists across the world address critical health needs. World Pharmacists Day is our opportunity to celebrate and make visible the profession’s contributions to better health outcomes. It is also a time to advocate for the full integration of pharmacists into health strategies and to remind governments, institutions, and stakeholders that investing in pharmacists is investing in a healthier future for all.

The first plane struck the North Tower at 2:46 PM Malta time on September 11, 2001.

25 Years later we remember the dozens of healthcare workers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and nurses amongst the 2,977 who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks that day. Many were killed while serving as first responders rushing into the burning towers to treat victims, while others were killed as passengers on the hijacked planes or as employees working inside the World Trade Center.

In the hours and days following the attacks, the true toll on the pharmacy community shifted to emergency response and long-term health exposure:
Ground Zero Pharmacy Response: Dozens of local pharmacists and mobile disaster units deployed directly to Ground Zero and nearby triage centers to coordinate emergency medications for rescue workers.
9/11-Related Illnesses: In the years following 2001, numerous healthcare professionals—including pharmacists, doctors, and nurses who volunteered or worked in the toxic dust of Lower Manhattan—have succumbed to cancers and respiratory diseases. The total number of deaths from 9/11-related illnesses has since surpassed the number of people killed on the day of the attacks themselves.
