Dental Association of Malta A non profit organization with the aim of representing the interests of all dental surgeons in Malta

The Association, which is scientific in purpose, non-political and non-profitable shall have the following objects:

a) To promote and further the progress of dentistry

b) To maintain the honour and safeguard the interests of the dental profession in Malta

c) To promote ethical conduct amongst members of the profession

d) To encourage meetings of members of the association and of members of

the dental profession generally

e) To represent the profession in its relations and negotiations with the government and other authorities

f) To collect and preserve dental literature and documents and make this available for reference to all members of the association; and

g) To accept, hold, invest, and administer gifts, legacies, bequests, funds, grants and property of any sort or nature of any value and use of such objects in conformity with the rules and regulations of the association

Dear Members,

With pleasure we would like to announce that after reporting and insistence by the DAM, the combined efforts of the Malta Medical Council, the Superintendent of Public Health and The Malta Police Force led to the immediate suspension of illegal dental consultation being carried out by foreign non EU and non registered dentists in a hotel in Malta.

The non registered dentists were ordered to stop their illegal operations and all patients were asked to leave.

The DAM would like to thank the SPH and the Malta Police Force for their timely intervention and open collaboration with the DAM.

We would also like to thank the Malta Medical Council for their cooperation and constant coordination between the DAM and the dentists representing the profession on the MMC.

This was a great example of how cooperation across entities can lead to success.

The Dental Association of Malta consistently strives in maintaining a high level of professional standard in the provision of dentistry in Malta.

Next week, on November 20th at 7.30pm, Dr Edward Sammut will be giving a lecture to the Dental Association of Malta at the Prince of Wales Own Club in Vittoriosa.

Entitled "From Balance to Breakdown: Inflammatory and Immune Responses in Periodontitis", the lecture will give an overview of the pathogenic mechanisms of periodontitis. The focus will be on how dysbiosis of the commensal bacteria of the oral cavity results in the responses of inflammation and recruitment of the immune system. A disproportionate response leads to bystander damage ultimately causing the tissue and bone damage we see in periodontitis.

Enzymes released by white blood cells attacking bacteria are now understood to be one of the key mechanisms of tissue damage in periodontitis. This AI generated image attempts to show the angry stimulated neutrophil releasing enzymes and destroying tissues around it.
