UM students visited Gansu for understanding of national development strategies and promoting two-way exchanges between young students from the two places
Under the organization of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Education and Youth Development Bureau of Macao, the Student Affairs Office (SAO) of the University of Macau organized a delegation of four students and one staff member to take part in the “Building Dreams Together, Walking the Silk Road Together” Gansu-Macao Youth Cultural Exchange Activity from September 13 to 19, 2026, hosted by the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Gansu Province. A total of 30 Macao university students went to Gansu for a study and exchange tour. The delegation visited Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang. The itinerary covered urban development, scientific research and innovation, revolutionary education, and Silk Road culture, making it rich and diverse. The students experienced firsthand the development achievements of the motherland’s northwest, deepened their understanding of national conditions, and promoted two-way exchanges between young students of the two places.
In Lanzhou, the members visited the Yellow River Scenic Line, the Innovation Park of the Biomedical Industry Base in Lanzhou High-tech Zone, the Lanzhou University History Museum and the Intelligent Laboratory for Safety Governance, and also experienced making Lanzhou beef noodles. At the opening ceremony, LI HIO CHENG, a FLL student, spoke on behalf of the Macao university students. Afterwards, the delegation had a face-to-face discussion with students from Lanzhou University, promoting mutual understanding between young students of the two places.
After going to Zhangye, the members visited the Colorful Danxia Geological Park. They marveled at the colorful Danxia landforms and also considered the balance between geological protection and tourism development. They then visited the Memorial Hall of the West Route Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. This was the most shocking and profound lesson of the trip. The historical photos, precious relics and restored scenes in the hall brought the members back to the years of war and flames. Facing several times as many enemy troops, harsh conditions and scarce supplies, the soldiers of the West Route Army fought bloody battles with the belief that “revolutionary ideals are higher than the heavens”. They gave their lives for national independence and the people’s liberation. The spirit of the West Route Army is loyalty to firm ideals and beliefs and to following the Party’s command; heroic courage that fears no sacrifice and advances one after another; a style of hard struggle and strict discipline; and deep army-civilian unity like fish and water. The members stood for a long time, deeply feeling that today’s peace has not come easily. As Macao youth, they should remember history, honor the martyrs, turn the Red Army spirit into motivation for study and moving forward, shoulder responsibilities bravely, and contribute to Macao and the country.
The delegation then moved on to Jiayuguan, visiting Qimu Dairy and Zixuan W**e Estate, and climbed the Jiayuguan Pass at night to feel the grandeur of the majestic pass at the western end of the Ming Great Wall and appreciate the profound weight of the ancient Silk Road. In Dunhuang, the members visited the Mogao Caves, admired the murals and painted sculptures, and learned about the difficulty of cultural relic protection; watched “Encore Dunhuang” to immersively experience the blending of civilizations over a thousand years; visited Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake; and inspected the Photovoltaic Expo Park and the Shouhang Energy Conservation solar thermal power project to learn about clean energy and the “dual carbon” opportunities. At the closing ceremony, the members reviewed what they had seen and learned, shared their reflections, and sang “Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies” together, bringing the journey to a perfect end.
This year is both the opening year of the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan and the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army’s Long March. Being able to take part in a study tour in Gansu and witness national development and historical inheritance was particularly meaningful. In just seven days, the gains were rich: historical and cultural identity was deepened, horizons in science, technology and industry were broadened, and the sense of responsibility as youth was strengthened. Macao youth should seize opportunities, broaden their horizons, integrate into national development, and contribute their youthful strength to the motherland.
