MAKE YOUR NAUTICAL DREAM COME TRUE WITH THE 2026 JERSEY CLIPPER BURSARY

Islanders hoping to achieve a nautical ambition are invited to apply for the 2026 Jersey Clipper Bursary – a £1,000 cash award aimed at furthering maritime endeavour.

The bursary, which also offers a £500 runner-up award, is designed to assist an Islander of any age to fulfil a particular nautical dream. This could, for example, be a trip on a tall ship, attending a training course, participating in a watersports competition or competing in an ocean race – anything with a maritime theme.

The annual award, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Yacht Race, was established 19 years ago through the generosity of Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS.

The successful applicant will follow in the wake of Jamie Le Marquand (17) who used the funds to take part in the 2025 Tall Ships Race, joining the crew of the historic fishing boat Excelsior on the leg from Scotland to Norway.

‘Everyone should try sailing on a tall ship,’ said Jamie, following his Baltic adventure. 'It’s a truly incredible experience with people coming from all over the globe for thesame reason – to sail.
‘Thanks to the Jersey Clipper Bursary for making this dream possible for me and I hope that other Jersey residents will be encouraged to apply for the 2026 bursary.’

The winners of last year’s £500 runner-up award – Todd Watkins, Tyler Horton, Richie Forbes, Harvey Godel and Juliette Walton – used the funds to compete in the David Haw Memorial Trophy – a weekend of J70 racing organised by the British Keelboat League on the Hamble River.

Islanders can apply for the 2026 Jersey Clipper Bursary by outlining their particular nautical ambition in no more than 200 words in an email to [email protected]

The deadline is 30 April.

The Eurokids take over Playa de Las Américas and display their level on their first day of competition at the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro. The youngest surfers stepped into the spotlight at the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro. The final event of the festival, the Eurokids, began this Saturday with more than 100 participants from across Europe arriving in Tenerife to compete on the renowned left of Las Palmeras. In a long day of competition, with more than eight hours of action, the Under-14surfers were the first to test the Spanish Left. Tenerife-based Italian Stefano Mandozzi (15.90) and Poland’s Niko Fleiss (17.00) signed the highest combined scores in the early rounds. Among the girls, Nadia Nalesso (16.25) impressed once again as she aims to add the U14 title to the U16 and U18 crowns won earlier this week. In the Under-12 division, Niko Fleiss (15.25) maintained his strong momentum, joined at the top by Germany’s Levi Hummel (14.00) and France’s Kyan Picon(13.45), son of recently crowned European Masters runner-up Miky Picon. In thegirls’ field, England’s Betsie Reay (11.85) and Martha Edwards (11.00) stood out in the opening round. The Under-10 surfers, the youngest in the festival, competed at the left of El Centro, where Wales’ Monty Cole (17.83) and Spain’s Mateo Sanmartín (13.50)
dominated both their heats and secured places in tomorrow’s final. The girls’ division will be decided in a direct final featuring Kaleia Peres, María de Brito, Adriana Gutiérrez, Eva Rico, and Penélope Pizzo. The Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro will conclude tomorrow, conditions permitting, along with its final musical programme: a Corona Sunset Session from 18:00f featuring Sistah Vibes and Juana La Cubana. This event would not be possible without the support of institutions such as Turismo de Arona; the Cabildo, through Turismo de Tenerife and the Tenerife Awaken Emotions brand; Islas Canarias and the Gobierno de Canarias; as well as brands like Spring Hotels and Corona, and collaborating companies such as Surfactory, Local Motion, Quirónsalud, Papagayo Tenerife and Veinte 04.
The full schedule of activities and all the latest updates from the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro are available on the event’s official website
(lasamericassurfpro.com) and on its social media channels ()

Here is a selection of Images by Nine by Five photographer, Gemma Daniel. Gemma is one of Jersey's leading up and coming surf photographers and was recently voted best photographer of the year at the recent VIACY awards ceremony. Gemma explains more. 'Growing up surrounded by the ocean, the beach has always been a significant part of my life. I’ve developed a deep connection with the shoreline and a passion for capturing the dynamic power of the sea, along with the incredible talent of the surfers who call Jersey home.
My lifelong involvement in the sports community has shaped my perspective behind the camera. It allows me to understand where to position myself and how to anticipate the action, helping me capture the most compelling images across a variety of sports.' Ocean Culture life, Ninebyfivephotography
