HOW OUR YEAR USUALLY WORKS:
Throughout the year we send FUNDS. We offer a sponsorship programme to assist those in need of a helping hand. Sponsorship is either for
PENSIONERS - Adopt a Granny scheme for those unable to make meet on a very small pension - some may be medical pensioners rather than old age pensioners. EDUCATION - we believe a good education often offers the opportunity to break t

he poverty cycle. We help fund homework clubs as well as individual children’s educational needs. FAMILY - we believe in keeping families together whenever possible. The most rewarding reports we can receive will say something along the lines of
“X is so grateful for your help, but now his/her/their circumstances have changed and no longer need your help. Thank you for what you made possible”. Regrettably such reports are few and far between but they do sometimes happen! SENDING HUMANITARIAN AID
As a general rule we collect relief aid from January till September or October (each year may differ so you would need to check). We sort and prepare the aid for shipment to Romania 2 or 3 times a year. The present cost of sending each aid consignment is now under £5000 but over £4000. So donations for transport costs are always appreciated. As the exchange rate varies it is not possible to predict an exact amount. We focus on the CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL from September / October till the end of the year.

If you’re packing a Christmas shoebox month by month then this month we complete the school supplies. So what I’m listing now will hopefully have been collected during May and finished off now in June:
For 3-6 pencils and chunky pencil crayons or wax crayons (if you have a sharpener ensure it fits the crayons) and a good supply of paper for writing. Maybe as well as paper add a simple coloring book - check it’s not too large for your shoebox. If funds allow add rubber and pencil case but be sure to have lots of paper.
For 6-11 notebooks, pencils, rubber, sharpener, something for coloring (at least 10 or 12 pencil crayons or felt pens), if funds allow add a pencil case, small ruler, pen and possibly a coloring book as well as the notebooks and pencils etc . These are going to be so useful at school.
For 12-16 again by end of June hopefully you will have notebooks, pens, pencils, rubber, sharpener, small set of coloring pencils / felt pens and calculator (calculator can be expensive - worth checking Paperclix and Pound Shop - or shop around / check on Amazon). If possible add pencil case and maybe some highlighters. This group prioritizes the school supplies as education is important to them and they start to realize this offers the hope of better employment prospects.

If you are packing a Christmas shoebox month by month with me then in June for the adults we need to source at least one useful item - suggestions: torch WITH SPARE BATTERIES ~ probably the torch is the top priority but other useful things include strong waterproof bag for shopping, tool set, sewing set, maybe ball of string - the question really is what may be useful remembering those we give to have very little and may not have electricity.
I will post suggestions for the children’s boxes tomorrow.

We have received this video from Ukraine showing how the humanitarian aid sent from Jersey is sorted and displayed. The warehouse is opened several times a week and those in need can go to select what is needed. As you can see it is very well organized. [There is an English translation of the commentary in small print at bottom of picture. Not always obvious if viewed on phone]
