Even as restoration work continues and parts of the Basilica are covered, its purpose remains unchanged: this is first and foremost a place of prayer.

At the heart of the San Clemente Project is the desire to preserve not only the extraordinary artistic and historical heritage of the Basilica, but also the living spiritual space it has been for centuries.

The work may transform the space around us, but its most important purpose remains the same: ensuring that this remains a place where people can encounter God, reflect, and pray.

The artists’ tools 🎨🛠️

Today we celebrate a figure for peace in the Church and in the world… but Pope St. John Paul II also holds an important place at the Basilica of San Clemente. He often came here to pray before the tomb of Saint Cyril of Thessalonica, Apostle to the Slavs.

During one of these visits, he knelt in prayer, deeply absorbed in the moment. As Fr. Paul Lawlor recalls, “you could see he felt the weight of the world on his shoulders.”

He was praying for peace, for the fall of the Berlin Wall, and for unity among the Slavic nations.

Next time you visit the tomb of St. Cyril, take a moment to pray for peace and unity, as did. But wherever you are, may his example remind us that peace is something we must pray for every day.

In the Lower Basilica of San Clemente is The Miracle of the Sea of Azov, a fresco that tells the story of a miraculous rescue.

But hidden within it is another story: the story of those who made the fresco possible.

Did you know that those who commissioned sacred art were sometimes depicted within the very works they helped create?

On the lower panel there is a circular medallion with a bust of St Clement who is being venerated by the donors of the fresco carrying candles: Beno de Rapiza, his wife Maria, their daughter Atilia and their son Clement.

Donors have always mattered. Centuries ago, patrons made the creation of sacred art possible; today, donors are helping make its preservation possible.

At San Clemente, the tradition continues. Our donors may not be painted into the frescoes themselves, but their generosity is helping ensure that these works of beauty and faith endure for generations to come.

Some things are entrusted to us so that we may pass them on.

For centuries, San Clemente has carried the stories of those who came before us through its ancient walls, sacred spaces, mosaics, and frescoes. Preserving them is not simply about caring for the past; it is about ensuring that their beauty and message can continue to speak to those who come after us.

A martyr is someone who defends their faith to the point of giving their life... and two of them are protagonists at the Basilica of San Clemente.

St. Clement, one of the earliest bishops of Rome, and St. Ignatius of Antioch, an early Church father, are connected by their martyrdom, and by their resting place.
