When we look at a fresco, our eyes naturally go to the main figures, like in this scene, where our attention is drawn to the veiling of St. Catherine, and to the beauty of the composition.
But for a conservator, every figure matters.
During restoration, the same care is given not only to the central characters, but also to the faces in the background, the folds of a garment, the architectural details, and even the smallest elements that might otherwise go unnoticed.
So the next time you admire the frescoes of San Clemente (or any work of sacred art)take a moment to look beyond the main scene. Hidden in every corner is the careful work of artists centuries ago, and of the conservators who help preserve their legacy today.
