When we look at a fresco, our eyes naturally go to the main figures, like in this scene, where our attention is drawn to the veiling of St. Catherine, and to the beauty of the composition.

But for a conservator, every figure matters.

During restoration, the same care is given not only to the central characters, but also to the faces in the background, the folds of a garment, the architectural details, and even the smallest elements that might otherwise go unnoticed.

So the next time you admire the frescoes of San Clemente (or any work of sacred art)take a moment to look beyond the main scene. Hidden in every corner is the careful work of artists centuries ago, and of the conservators who help preserve their legacy today.

There’s a place in Rome most people never find.

Hidden in plain sight, steps from the Colosseum, there’s a 12th-century basilica built over a 4th-century church, built over a 1st-century Roman house, built over ancient pagan temples.

Layer upon layer, we get to see a thousand years in a single building… This is the Basilica di San Clemente. And right now, we’re racing to save it.

Follow along as we restore one of Rome’s most extraordinary secrets fresco by fresco, stone by stone.

The Hortus Foundation was founded to preserve, restore, and champion the beautiful fruits of the Catholic Church so that they may continue to inspire the world.

The word Hortus means “garden” in Latin. Just as a garden must be carefully tended to flourish, the Church’s artistic, historical, and spiritual treasures require stewardship and care to be passed on to future generations.

The restoration of the Basilica of San Clemente is one example of this mission in action: protecting a sacred inheritance while helping new generations encounter the beauty of the faith.

For some, the most unforgettable part of San Clemente is its history and seeing a journey through centuries beneath one roof.

For others, it’s the beauty of the frescoes, where faith, art, and restoration come together to tell stories that have endured for generations.

Some are drawn to the ancient basilica below, the quiet chapels, the mosaics, or simply the sense of peace they find within its walls.

Every visitor discovers something different at San Clemente.

What is your favorite part of the Basilica? Let us know in the comments below.

✨ Feast of the Ascension ✨

At San Clemente, this moment is captured in one of its ancient frescoes in the Lower Baslica.

Christ is lifted into heaven, carried by angels, while the disciples, with Our Lady at the center, look on in wonder.

Behind Mary, the sky is painted in Egyptian blue, a glimpse of the original brilliance this fresco once held.

Even the empty space beneath her tells a story, possibly once holding a stone or relic from the Holy Land.

This is one of the characters witnessing The Transfer of the Body of St. Clement in the 18th century fresco of the same name. Take a look at how it looks now and how it looked before!

Our conservation team is carefully restoring the fresco little by little, figure by figure. This before-and-after glimpse shows just one character brought back to life through the ongoing work of the San Clemente Project and its devoted team of artists.

There is still much more to uncover, and we hope to share a larger reveal of the fresco soon. Stay tuned!
