The FTII Open Forum convened last night, before today's protests throughout Pune, to share our creative expressions and have dialogue between students, artists, educators, student unions, workers unions, collectives, and progressive groups, to reflect on what exactly we have been fighting for and against, how we are moving ahead, and how we would WANT to move ahead.

Educate. Agitate. Organise. Many of us have been agitating for the past many days, but equally we must educate and organise to give direction to where we're headed as a movement. To reflect on what actually can be the roles of our organisations and groups beyond just reaction. There has been a systematic attack on educational institutions for many years now, and slowly, the public institution has been made more and more inaccessible. Perhaps FTII can be a space to enable this conversation, and this is how we can actually be a part of the larger movement to sculpt a 'better' education. We will update with videos of the same, and share the dialogue that took place.

To All Students, Artists, Educators, Activists, Performers, Unions, Collectives and Progressive Groups, and everyone who wants to channelise their voice - the FTII Student Body welcomes you to join us at a peaceful open forum of creative expression in solidarity with the students, educators, and all citizens participating in the democratic movement sweeping across the country.

There is an urgency in reflecting, through dialogue and through art, about the direction in which we must move as a larger movement. This struggle extends much larger than examination controversies. There is a continued erosion of public education that is damaging not only educational institutions but also the democratic fabric of our country. There is an erosion, too, of the freedom of expression – censorship that actively harms our ability to think, question, and create freely - this is a threat that concerns every artist, student, and citizen. We need to unite, hold dialogue, and build a shared space of reflection and resistance.

Today, on the 20th of July, the FTII Student Body demonstrated at the FTII Entrance for every student and citizen raising their voice for a just, equitable, and democratic future.

As we protested to demand the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan and the scrapping of the NTA, news emerged of the state violence against protestors in Delhi.

The FTIISA strongly condemns the violation of the right to assemble and the right to protest. A statement on the same has been issued by the FTIISA.

The FTII Student Body and Alumni joined the larger protest in support of calls for resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan and Narendra Modi organised in Pune. Since 2017, nearly 20 major exam leaks have been linked to NTA, and following the last botched FTII Entrance Test and paper leak, it is rumoured that FTII ET will also be handled by NTA. Why, so NTA can allow for 'official' leaks?

This is a much larger issue than simply entrance examinations. Higher education over the last few years had been made more and more inaccessible. As a country, our education policy seems to be to keep the populace as uneducated as possible. Higher fees, lower facilities, botched tests that ruin students lives, focus on privatised education, the list goes on and on.

In light of the planned protest on June 11, 2026, in Pune, and the larger demonstrations taking place across the country against recurring examination controversies and the anti-people policies of the current regime, the FTII Students’ Association stands in solidarity with the people's movement and the associated protests. A spirit of dissatisfaction and frustration has emerged in students from across fields of study following malicious examination controversies and harmful education policies which have been inflicted upon them year after year. These concerns are reflected in the experiences of students across the institutes.

Under the current political regime, education has increasingly become a site of arbitrary intervention, while educational institutions have come under growing pressure through censorship and restrictions on free expression. The continued push towards centralisation and homogenisation, whether through policies and mechanisms such as NEET, NTA, the NEP, and similar reforms, have made access to educational institutions less equitable and further deepened existing injustices. These developments have not only undermined institutional autonomy and diversity but have also generated widespread frustration and discontent among students across the country.

The FTIISA stands with the people's anger and their democratic uprising. These protests reflect the collective frustration and discontent that have emerged across the country, and we stand in solidarity with those participating in them. In light of repeated examination controversies and serious allegations of corruption that have undermined public trust in educational institutions and processes, the Union Minister of Education must take responsibility and step down from his position. The FTII Students’ Association extends its solidarity to the people's movement and protestors, many of whom are students directly bearing the consequences of these failures.

To students affected by close proximity of FTII reexamination and SRFTI orientation, those who were unable to change their examination centre to "Kolkata" in time before SRFTI's announcement of a break on 12th July.

Email a request for the change in the FTII examination centre from your current centre to "Kolkata", to the following email addresses:

It has been brought to the notice of the Film and Television Institute of India Students’ Association that the integrity of the FTII Entrance Test 2025-2026 has been compromised across multiple exam centres. FTII Students' Association vehemently condemns the gross misconduct and mismanagement that have been reported and documented, and ensures the cooperation of the entire student body at FTII to bring a fair resolution to this matter.

To facilitate effective communication and the documentation of candidate grievances, FTIISA is opening a student helpline. We request the candidates to remain calm while the issue is understood better, and connect with any of the helpline contacts from the students’ side to report any issue or raise any concern regarding the entrance test.

FTIISA congratulates the entire team of Shadows of a Moonless Night on their selection at La Cinef, Festival de Cannes. Helmed by student director Mehar Malhotra from the 2020 batch, this achievement marks yet another significant moment for student filmmaking at FTII.

While this is a moment of jubilation, it also lays bare the institutional injustice faced by the 2020 batch. This was perhaps the only batch in FTII’s history to be stripped of all coordinated exercises, leaving the diploma film practically as their only major exercise, through decisions that were not only arbitrary but deeply punitive in nature. The deeply incompetent administration, lacking any grounding in cinema, of that period must be unequivocally called out for its vengeful and short-sighted approach, which severely disrupted the academic and artistic life of the batch. Such actions reflected an attitude dismissive of artistic practice and fundamentally out of step with the ethos of a film school.

We expect that no future batch at FTII suffers as the 2020 batch did at the hands of individuals with malafide intent occupying administrative positions. Art thrives in freedom, and the success of Mehar’s film stands as a testament to that.
