🌿 “Aranyak” Inauguration Receives Wide Media Coverage 🌿

The inauguration of the “Aranyak” Mangrove Resource Hub in the Sundarbans on 23rd March 2026 garnered significant media attention, highlighting the growing importance of community-led environmental initiatives in one of the most climate-vulnerable regions of the country.

The event was graced by eminent dignitaries including Shri Swapan Dhar, Hon’ble Managing Director, SBI Foundation; Shri Subrata Hazra, AGM, LHO Kolkata Circle (Marketing, Communication & CSR Dept., SBI); Shri Ritesh Sain, Program Head (CONSERW & ACE); along with Ansuman Das, Secretary & Director, and Arunabha Das, Head of Programme Development & Partnership and Lead – Programme Operation, representing Sabuj Sangha.

The presence of media, local stakeholders, and community members made the occasion even more impactful, amplifying the message of environmental conservation and climate resilience.

🌱 Why “Aranyak” Matters:
The Mangrove Resource Hub is a vital step towards:
• Restoring and conserving the fragile mangrove ecosystem
• Protecting coastal communities from climate risks like cyclones and erosion
• Promoting sustainable environmental practices through community engagement
• Serving as a centre for learning, research, and awareness on mangrove conservation

As the Sundarbans continue to face increasing ecological threats, initiatives like “Aranyak” stand as a beacon of hope—strengthening both nature and communities.

💚 Building awareness today for a resilient tomorrow.

💙 Healthcare at the Doorstep: A Journey to Recovery

In many remote parts of the Alipurduar district, access to proper healthcare remains a daily struggle. Distance, cost, and lack of awareness often force families to depend on unqualified practitioners, putting their health at risk.
“Madhabi Das” (name changed), a 60-year-old homemaker from Soudpara village, was one such case. Living in a financially vulnerable household with seven family members, she had been suffering from severe lower back pain for over six months. With limited options, she relied on local informal treatment—but found no relief.
Everything changed when the Sanjeevani Clinic on Wheels reached her village. 🚑
With proper medical consultation, timely treatment, and continuous follow-ups, she gradually recovered. By January 2026, she experienced significant relief and was able to return to her daily activities with comfort and dignity.
✨ Impact:
• Access to qualified healthcare at her doorstep
• Reduced dependence on unsafe medical practices
• Increased awareness within the community
Today, she not only feels better but is also encouraging others to seek proper medical care.
💚 A small intervention, a big change—bringing healthcare closer to those who need it most.

🌱 Inauguration of “Aranyak” – A Step towards a Resilient Sundarbans 🌱

The Sundarbans, one of the world’s most ecologically significant regions, has been facing increasing threats from climate change, rising salinity, and repeated cyclones, leading to the gradual decline of mangrove cover and biodiversity.

In response to these challenges, Sabuj Sangha, with the support of SBI Foundation, has established the “Aranyak” Mangrove Resource Hub under the SBIF Aranya – Mangrove Restoration Initiative in the Sundarbans.

This significant milestone was marked on 23rd March 2026, with the inauguration of the Hub by Shri Swapan Dhar, Hon’ble Managing Director, SBI Foundation. The occasion was further graced by Shri Subrata Hazra, AGM, LHO Kolkata Circle (Marketing, Communication & CSR Dept., SBI), Shri Ritesh Sain, Program Head (CONSERW & ACE), and Shri Ansuman Das, Secretary & Director, along with Shri Arunabha Das, Head of Programme Development & Partnership and Lead – Programme Operation, who represented Sabuj Sangha at the event.

Envisioned as a community-led knowledge and action centre, “Aranyak” aims to:
• Restore declining mangrove ecosystems
• Safeguard the rich biodiversity of the Sundarbans
• Strengthen community capacity through training and awareness
• Promote sustainable environmental practices

🌿 The Hub will serve as a platform for:
• Mangrove nursery development
• Community capacity building
• Engagement of local stakeholders, including 40 Self-Help Groups
• Sensitizing school students as future ambassadors of conservation

It is also envisioned as a living laboratory, enabling research, field-based learning, and collaboration among researchers, institutions, and environmental practitioners.

Supported by local governance systems and aligned with government initiatives, “Aranyak” reflects a collective commitment to climate resilience, ecological restoration, and sustainable development.

💚 Together, we move forward to protect what protects us.

🌞 Lighting the Path to Safer Communities | FRDP Initiative 🌿
Under the Focused Rural Development Program (FRDP) supported by HDFC Bank, a total of 220 solar lights have been installed across Alipurduar district — bringing light, safety, and dignity to remote rural communities.
✨ Stories from the Field:
📍 Amarpur Tea Garden
Located along a traditional elephant movement corridor, this tea garden frequently experiences human–wildlife interaction. To enhance safety for both residents and wildlife, a solar light has been installed at a key entry point used by elephants. Improved visibility helps workers and families stay alert at night, reducing risks and promoting peaceful coexistence.
📍 Paschim Chengmari
In this small village, a once-dark, unsafe road created daily challenges for residents after sunset. With the installation of a solar light, nighttime movement has become safer and more accessible — especially for women, children, and elderly community members.
💡 These solar lights are more than infrastructure — they symbolize security, resilience, and care for communities living in vulnerable conditions.
Together, we continue working towards safer, sustainable, and empowered rural spaces.

International Language Day was observed at Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan and at Aalor Disha, where students celebrated linguistic and cultural diversity within their own learning spaces.

The day was dedicated to honouring the martyrs of the Language Movement of Bangladesh, whose sacrifice continues to inspire generations to value their mother tongue.

Through recitations, songs, and reflections, children expressed pride in their languages and learned the importance of multilingualism in building unity and respect. 🌍✨

The remote village’s free education centre turned into a vibrant hub of joy during the annual picnic organised under the Nabadiganta Program.

For children from underprivileged families, life is often filled with responsibilities far beyond their age. But on this special day, books were replaced with games, lessons with laughter, and worries with wide smiles.

The picnic became more than just an outing — it was a reminder that every child deserves moments of happiness, freedom, and carefree play. 💛

In the heart of the Sundarbans, along the riverbanks of Raidighi in South 24 Parganas, lives 53-year-old Durga Majhi.
Widowed and physically unwell, Durga carries the responsibility of holding her family together. With her sons working as migrant labourers in another state, she stays back in the village with her young granddaughter, managing the household under extremely difficult circumstances.

But Durga refused to surrender to hardship.
She began catching crabs and shrimp fry in the river and worked as an agricultural labourer to support her family. In March 2025, she attended a meeting under the Aranya Project of Sabuj Sangha, where she learned how mangrove conservation could protect her village from floods and natural disasters.
With support from SBI Foundation, she joined other women in planting mangroves on vulnerable river char lands — digging pits, sowing seeds, fencing saplings, and nurturing new life along the riverbanks.
Today, Durga not only earns wages through this work but also dreams of dense mangrove forests shielding her village. She has started saving ₹50 per month through a Self-Help Group and hopes to build collective economic self-reliance for women in her community.
From survival to stewardship — Durga Majhi is not just protecting forests; she is shaping the future of the Sundarbans. 🌿
