Bridging Classrooms and Communities: MSW Students’ Rural Fieldwork in Haldhibari Village
Small steps, meaningful connections, and learning beyond the classroom.
From 21–26 September 2026, five MSW students from Bosco Institute, Jorhat, completed their first phase of rural fieldwork with Uriamghat Foundation in Haldhibari village, located along the Assam–Nagaland border in Golaghat district, Assam.
The fieldwork provided an opportunity for the students to engage directly with rural communities, understand local realities, and learn through meaningful interactions with people in their everyday lives.
Throughout the week, the students participated in a range of community-based activities, including:
🌱 Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA): Engaging with community members to understand village-level needs, resources, challenges, and aspirations.
🏡 Household Visits and Community Interaction: Visiting households, listening to residents, and gaining insights into their lived experiences and local development priorities.
💜 Women’s Safety Index Survey: Engaging with the community to understand women’s safety concerns and perspectives as part of our commitment to gender equality through Project Nari Shakti.
👧 Interactions with Schoolgirls: Conducting interviews with girl students at PM SHRI Haldhibari ME School and Pillibora High School to better understand their experiences and perspectives on safety and well-being.
📚 Learning Through Play: Spending evenings with children, organising games and interactive learning activities, and helping them learn alphabets and numeracy through play-based methods.
🧹 School Cleanliness Drive: Working alongside schoolchildren to promote cleanliness, hygiene, and collective responsibility for a healthy learning environment.
Beyond these activities, the week was about listening, building trust, understanding community realities, and recognising that meaningful social work begins with people and their experiences.
🤝 A Growing Partnership for Community Development
This fieldwork also represents a growing collaboration between Bosco Institute, Jorhat, and Uriamghat Foundation—a shared commitment to connecting academic learning with grassroots action.
For the students, rural fieldwork offers an opportunity to translate classroom knowledge into practice, develop professional skills, and understand the complexities of community development firsthand. For the communities, it creates opportunities for interaction with young social work professionals, participatory learning, and collective action.
We are pleased to share that this engagement will continue through further fieldwork phases in October and November 2026, with the students returning to the community for additional learning and engagement.
